Injury updates on Nevin, Ellis and Wells (and more)

Tyler Nevin avoided the injured list and says he could play tonight if the Orioles wanted him to come off the bench.

Probably won’t happen, but it’s an option.

Nevin exited last night’s game in the sixth inning with right groin soreness and the club planned to re-evaluate him this afternoon after he arrived at the ballpark.

“I feel better,” he said. “A little bit of soreness, but I’m day-to-day. Nothing I’m too concerned about for the long haul, but it’s something to keep an eye on.”

Good news for a team that’s carrying three reserves on a 26-man roster.

Tonight’s bench consists of Nevin, infielder Chris Owings and catcher Anthony Bemboom.

“I’m available tonight in a situation if I’m needed, but I think the goal is to keep me off my feet a little bit today,” Nevin said. “I’ll move around, I’ll be out during BP. I’m going to hit in the cages and I’ll move around and throw. But I’ll take it easy today.”

Pitcher Chris Ellis underwent arthroscopic surgery today on his right shoulder, and the Orioles termed it “successful” in their latest update.

Dr. Keith Meister handled the procedure in Arlington, Texas. Meister also performed ligament-reconstructive surgery on John Means’ left elbow on April 27.

Ellis faced five batters in an April 24 game in Anaheim, retired none and went on the injured list with inflammation in the shoulder. Ellis was shut down in September with similar discomfort.

The Orioles signed Ellis to a minor league deal on March 16 and he replaced Means in the rotation.

Ellis could go on the 60-day injured list, creating a second opening on the 40-man roster.

Pitcher Alexander Wells left the clubhouse last night with his bags packed, and his nameplate has been removed from his locker. He received a goodbye hug from starter Spenser Watkins.

Wells is on the injured list with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, and the Orioles estimated that he’d miss eight to 12 weeks. Surgery wasn’t recommended, and he could be headed down to Sarasota for treatment and rehab.

Wells also could be placed on the 60-day injured list.

Double-A Bowie defeated Harrisburg today, 10-7, at Prince George’s Stadium, and Adley Rutschman went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored as the designated hitter. Gunnar Henderson, starting at third base, was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Henderson is 7-for-12 this month with a double, home run and four RBIs.

Drew Rom allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings with no walks and six strikeouts. Jensen Elliott was charged with four earned runs (five total) and nine hits in two innings.

Update: Manager Brandon Hyde said Ellis will miss the rest of the season.

“Hopefully, he’ll be back next season,” Hyde said. “He’s got a labrum and cuff cleanup that’s going to finish his season. So, sometime next season.”

Hyde confirmed that Wells is in Sarasota to receive treatment and begin rehabbing his sore left elbow.

“He’ll be out for a month to two months,” Hyde said.

Hyde also said he’s hoping Nevin is available off the bench. Nevin was on the field earlier to work out.

“He felt a lot better today, which is very positive,” Hyde said. “We’re happy about that. Hopefully, it’s a day-to-day thing and he’ll be available tonight.”
