SARASOTA, Fla. - Infielder Jimmy Paredes could begin the season on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his lower back.
The injury occurred a few days ago while Paredes was lifting weights at the Ed Smith Stadium complex. He hasn't played since Tuesday.
Paredes would join catcher Matt Wieters, shortstop J.J Hardy and outfielder David Lough on the DL. However, Paredes wouldn't be eligible to return until April 16, five days later than the others in the group.
Paredes, who's out of minor league options, is batting .364 (20-for-55) with seven doubles, one triple, two home runs and 12 RBIs. Paredes and Chris Davis are tied for the team lead in RBIs.
Davis also will miss opening day while serving the final game of his suspension.
Manager Buck Showalter indicated that the Orioles could carry 13 pitches to start the season, which would create room for Kevin Gausman and Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia.
Showalter also said he won't decide on a fifth starter until after the first or second game against the Rays at Tropicana Field.
Bud Norris is confirmed as the starter in the April 10 home opener against the Blue Jays.
Ben Werthan, the Orioles' advanced scouting coordinator, will replace Adam Gladstone as replay coordinator. Werthan will handle both jobs.
