Jimmy Paredes is back swinging the bat well, which has been big for the Orioles. He had three hits - including two doubles - tonight in four at-bats in the O's 4-3 win over Cleveland, their 16th win in their last 21 games.
He singled in the sixth then crossed the plate for the tying run; leading off the eighth, he doubled and then scored the go-ahead run on a Chris Davis single to break a 3-3 tie.
Over his last five games, Paredes is 11-for-21 (.524). Over his last 12 games, he is 19-for-48 (.396) with two homers and 10 RBIs. Paredes is batting .319 for the season.
"We've been working hard on that," Paredes said about his bat heating up again. "Put my effort in and kept working hard on my swing. I have a couple of drills I've been doing, and some of the guys helped me out too."
He has heated up, as has his team, which has five wins the last six games and 14 in the last 18.
"We feel great. We want to be in first place. Keep fighting and try to keep winning. When we are winning all these games, everyone is so happy," Paredes said.
Ryan Flaherty was 2-for-3 with a walk in the win. His bloop single in sixth gave the Orioles a brief 3-2 lead.
"Every night you get a chance to get a win, it is big. We take the field every night and expect to win. It doesn't always work out that way," Flaherty said.
It was also big to get three runs in seven innings off last year's Cy Young Winner, right-hander Corey Kluber. He fanned 10 Orioles tonight over five innings, but none over his last two frames.
"He won the Cy Young for a reason," Flaherty said. "He's got good stuff. Maybe left a couple of balls over the plate that he wished he didn't. But he's one of the best in the league."
O's starter Wei-Yin Chen was activated today after being optioned to Single-A Frederick where he made a three-inning start last weekend. Tonight he went six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs versus Cleveland. He got a no-decision, but the Orioles are now 9-5 in his 14 starts.
"I felt pretty good but made some mistakes during the game and allowed a couple of home runs. Everybody did their best today. Happy we had the win, and it was a team effort," Chen said through his interpreter.
Chen was asked if he had talked to manager Buck Showalter since he returned to the team.
"We haven't had a chance to talk today but I don't think there are any problems. We talked before I got optioned," he said.
Zach Britton picked up his 22nd save in 23 chances and lowered his ERA to 1.93. He pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth by Mike Aviles as he was working for the fifth time in a seven-day stretch.
"They are not always easy I guess," Britton said. "The last couple I've had some guys on and had to work out of it. For me, guys are starting to get aggressive on that sinker so it is just about execution on that first hitter, and the last couple of times it just hasn't been there. I learned last year you go through times where it seems like you have men on each time.
"It is the times where things are not going your way each time where you have to battle. I know I'm one pitch away from a (potential) double play ball. So if the guy gets on, focus on trying to get a groundball."
The Orioles improved to a season-high five games over .500 at 39-34, and they are now 14-12 in the first game of a series. They are 6-0-1 in their past seven series and can add to that if they get a victory here on Saturday or Sunday against the Indians.
