Jones homerless streak the longest of his career (O's win 6-0)

Adam Jones struck out looking tonight with J.J. Hardy on first base and one out in the bottom of the first inning. Jones wasn't happy with plate umpire Jordan Baker's call on the third strike. He can't be too pleased with his homerless drought, either. Jones hasn't homered since July 27, a stretch of 109 at-bats that's the longest of his career. He went 108 at-bats without one from May 1 to June 5, 2008. His next homer will be his 25th of the season and the 100th of his career. Chris Tillman retired the White Sox in order in the top of the first. He's allowed 14 runs in the opening inning this season. His next highest total is four in the seventh. A win tonight would move the Orioles 14 games above .500 for the first time since June 21, 2005. Buck Showalter's record would improve to 174-173 since he took over as manager on Aug. 3, 2010. The Orioles have registered 70 wins this season. They haven't exceeded that total since 2005 (74). Joe Saunders, who will make his Orioles debut Wednesday night, is 4-3 with a 3.63 ERA in eight career starts against the White Sox. Six of them have been quality starts. Update: Chris Sale was sailing along for the White Sox, striking out four straight Orioles, including two to start the bottom of the second inning. Nate McLouth singled, stole second and took third on a throwing error. Manny Machado walked and stole his first major league base. Robert Andino walked to load the bases. Nick Markakis cleared them. Markakis' double to right-center field gave the Orioles a 3-0 lead against Sale, who has thrown 48 pitches in two innings. Markakis was batting .335 with 20 RBIs and an .881 OPS in 42 games as the leadoff hitter before tonight. Update II: Lew Ford homered with two outs in the third, his second in two nights. The guy hadn't hit one in the majors in five years before last night. It's been that kind of a season. Ford has homered in consecutive games for the third time in his career. It happened most recently on Aug. 19-21, 2005 vs. the Mariners, when he homered in three straight games. Update III: Machado's sacrifice fly in the sixth increased the Orioles' lead to 5-0. Mark Reynolds and McLouth singled with one out. McLouth is 3-for-3 tonight. Andino singled with two outs for his first multi-hit game since July 4. Sale lasted only four innings in his shortest start. He was charged with four runs and six hits, with three walks, five strikeouts and one home run. He threw 75 pitches, 46 for strikes. Tillman has allowed one hit in six scoreless innings. He's walked four and struck out four. Update IV: Tillman allowed one hit over seven scoreless innings, with four walks and five strikeouts. He threw 109 pitches, 67 for strikes. Tonight's attendance: 12,841 Update V: Jones' homerless streak ended at 110 at-bats when he lined a Philip Humber pitch onto the flag court in right field in the seventh inning to increase the Orioles' lead to 7-0. Jones belted his 25th homer this season to tie his career high, his first since July 27 and the 100th of his career. He got a lot done with one swing. Down on the farm, Dylan Bundy had a shutout when he left tonight's game at Double-A Bowie with one out in the sixth inning, but two inherited runners scored while he sat on the bench. He's charged with two runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings, with four walks and six strikeouts. He threw 97 pitches, 61 for strikes. Update VI: Brian Matusz finished up the last two innings in the Orioles' 6-0 win over the White Sox, which moved them 14 games above .500 for the first time since June 21, 2005. The only hit off Tillman in seven innings was Dayan Viciedo's infield single leading off the fifth. The Orioles are 55-0 when leading after seven innings and 58-1 when leading after eight. They're 63-31 when they hit a home run.
