Kevin Gausman set to make 2016 debut

Yovani Gallardo is expected to meet up with the Orioles in St. Petersburg, Fla. for their three-game series against the Rays at Tropicana Field.

Gallardo will receive treatment from head athletic trainer Richie Bancells after undergoing an MRI yesterday to confirm that his health issue is right shoulder and biceps tendinitis. And to figure out what's causing it.

A cortisone injection will shut down Gallardo for a few days.

Gallardo leaves the rotation and Kevin Gausman enters it.

gausman-pitching-gray-glasses.jpgGausman will be activated from the disabled list today, forcing the Orioles into another roster move. A pitcher will need to step aside for Gausman, who came down with right shoulder tendinitis in spring training and couldn't break camp with the team.

The rotation currently consists of Gausman, Chris Tillman, Ubaldo Jimenez, Tyler Wilson and Mike Wright. Vance Worley has moved to the bullpen, but he could return to a starting role.

No sense trying to guess the corresponding roster move. We know Wright, T.J. McFarland and Mychal Givens have minor league options. We also know Wilson is starting Thursday night against the White Sox at Camden Yards.

Gausman is 2-3 with a 6.16 ERA and 1.763 WHIP in nine career games (seven starts) versus the Rays and 2-1 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in six games (four starts) at Tropicana Field.

The current group is batting .308 (20-for-65) against Gausman. Evan Longoria is 6-for-18 with a double and home run, Logan Forsythe is 4-for-5 with two doubles and a home run, and Brandon Guyer is 3-for-5 with three doubles.

Chris Archer is off to a miserable start for the Rays, going 0-4 with a 7.32 ERA and 2.085 WHIP in four starts. He's allowed 18 runs (16 earned) and 30 hits in 19 2/3 innings, with 11 walks, 29 strikeouts, six home runs and three wild pitches. He hasn't worked more than 5 1/3 innings.

Right-handers are batting .346 against Archer and left-handers are batting .343. He's 0-2 with a 3.48 ERA and 1.742 WHIP in 10 1/3 innings at home and 0-2 with an 11.57 ERA and 2.464 WHIP in 9 1/3 innings on the road.

Archer faced the Orioles on April 8 at Camden Yards and surrendered six runs and 10 hits in five innings. Chris Davis homered in the second inning and Jonathan Schoop, Nolan Reimold and Manny Machado homered in the fifth.

Archer is 2-5 with a 5.03 ERA and 1.509 WHIP in 10 career games (nine starts) against the Orioles and the current group is batting .301 (43-for-143). Machado is 9-for-22 with a home run, Davis is 5-for-14 with two doubles, two home runs and six walks, Matt Wieters is 6-for-18 with a double, J.J. Hardy is 5-for-14 with two doubles and Schoop is 4-for-7 with a double and home run.

Adam Jones is an exception, going 2-for-22 with seven strikeouts.

Mark Trumbo has 16 RBIs this season, all of them on the road. He's a career .303/.303/.545 hitter (10-for-33) with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs in nine games at Tropicana Field.

Trumbo is batting .343/.378/.657 (12-for-35) with three home runs and 11 RBIs during his current nine-game hitting streak. He's 11-for-22 with seven RBIs with two outs this season.
