The Orioles just keep finding ways to win and they have used their whole roster and then some to do it. They faced the Nationals' Gio Gonzalez on Monday. He took the mound leading the National League in ERA. They faced Max Scherzer last night. He looked like he was on the way to a third career no-hitter.
But the Orioles won both games. The Nationals have won three NL East titles since 2012, but they just can't beat the Orioles. The O's are 8-1 in the last nine games between the teams and 19-7 (.731) since 2012. Since these teams first met in 2006, the Orioles are 38-24 (.613) against the Nationals.
Meanwhile, the Orioles just keep winning close games. They are 8-1 in one-run games and 7-2 in two-run games. That adds up to 15-3 (.833) in games decided by two runs or less. They are 5-1 (.833) in extra innings games.
They keep finding a way and they've produced a great 32-game start.
In his second appearance with the Orioles, right-hander Logan Verrett once again entered a game in extra innings and once again had a scoreless outing. It was two innings on April 30 at Yankee Stadium and three innings last night. He pitched the 10th, 11th and 12th as the Orioles rallied to beat the Nats 5-4 in 12 innings. He got the win in both games, allowing three hits with one walk and four strikeouts over five innings.
"That's just how I drew it up," Verrett joked. "My first two outings with the Orioles. That's how I dreamt it would go."
Verrett needed just 33 pitches to get nine outs and he threw 26 strikes. He got hot-hitting Ryan Zimmerman to ground out with two on to end the top of the 10th.
In the time he has been an Oriole, Verrett said there are a few impressive things about the team that has allowed them to produce such a good record.
"I think it's just the type of players we have in this clubhouse," Verrett said. "I think it's a true testament to these guys. They're good people. We play together well. We feed off each other's energies, and we don't let each other get down. We're there to pick each other up, and I think that's a big deal. It's nice to be a part of something like that."
The Orioles have the major leagues' best record at 22-10. They've won six in a row. They have swept two straight series. They are 13-3 at home. They are 8-1-2 in 11 series. So it's been going pretty well, you could say.
Joseph and Wieters: They are two very good friends and they were involved in a special moment at Camden Yards on Monday night. When former Orioles catcher Matt Wieters made his return to Baltimore and got a standing ovation in the third inning, Caleb Joseph was standing right behind him, nodding his approval.
Wieters is not one to ever bring attention to himself. But this time, he at least took a moment to let the ovation soak in and then wave to the crowd. Joseph told me he had a chance to talk to Wieters about that ovation before last night's game.
"He deserved it," Joseph said. "He is still one the main reasons this organization turned around to winning ways. He's done a ton for the community. He and his wife, Maria, are still huge advocates in the community here. A lot of people don't get to see the type of person he is.
"It sends a warm fuzzy feeling in everybody's heart. I talked to him (Tuesday) about it. He was extremely appreciative. The Oriole fans, they really appreciate guys that come in here and lay it on the line. They know the guys that care about the Orioles and there will always be a special place in Baltimore for Wieters.
"If he would have stepped right in the box (to hit and not take in the ovation), I was going to make him take that moment in. It was a special moment."
More O's and Nats notes:
* The Orioles were 0-8 this year when behind after eight innings until pulling out last night's game. They scored twice with two outs in the ninth to tie it at 4-4.
* Washington's Adam Lind hit a pinch-hit three-run homer off Ubaldo Jiménez in the eighth and that gave the Nats a 4-1 lead they could not hold. As a pinch-hitter in 2017, Lind is 6-for-11 with three homers, nine RBIs and an OPS of 2.070. All three homers he has hit have come as a pinch-hitter.
* Adam Jones hit a solo homer in the eighth off Scherzer. He is now batting .448 (13-for-29) in his career with four homers off Scherzer.
* Jones' next home run at home will be his 124th at Camden Yards, tying him with Rafael Palmeiro for the most in ballpark history. Jones now has 744 RBIs as an Oriole and that ties Brady Anderson for sixth on the club's all-time list. Next up is Ken Singleton in fifth with 766 RBIs.
* When the first inning ended 0-0 last night it snapped a streak of 42 consecutive innings the Orioles had led. The streak began Thursday at Boston. According to Elias, it was the longest such streak since the Los Angeles Angels held a lead for 43 straight innings from June 2-7, 2008.
* Mark Trumbo's single won it in the last of the 12th. It was Trumbo's second walk-off hit of the year following a walk-off homer on opening day versus Toronto. It was his seventh career walk-off hit.
* Seth Smith hit a solo homer off Scherzer for the Orioles' first hit last night in the sixth inning. Smith went 2-for-4 and is batting .311. Over his past four games, he is 9-for-16 (.563).
* The Orioles went 4-for-7 last night with runners in scoring position. They are batting .375 (21-for-56) with RISP over their past six games.
