Lough avoids disabled list

NEW YORK - David Lough will return to the Orioles for tonight's game against the Yankees and be available off the bench. No trip to the disabled list. Just a quick trip to Baltimore. Lough underwent concussion tests today and has been cleared. He was experiencing symptoms similar to the ones in spring training that forced the Orioles to shut him down, but doctors ruled out a concussion. Lough is listed as a reserve on the lineup card. Jemile Weeks will return to Triple-A Norfolk without appearing in a game. He dressed today using Lough's locker in the visiting clubhouse at Yankee Stadium. Interesting turn of events, to say the least. "David is on his way back," said manager Buck Showalter. "He will be here for the game at some point if he can make all the connections. He had some potential concussion symptoms that we wanted to check out and we did, and we're completely clear from that, so that was really good news. So, he's heading back here. We didn't want to proceed any further until we got that as not being a possibility. That was good news we got today in the afternoon. "We thought because he had similar symptoms that it might be something because we had the same tests done in Sarasota. We wanted to let our guys see it and have him weigh in on it and he concurred with what was in Sarasota. So hopefully, he will be back in time to make a contribution tonight. "I don't want to get into the particulars and exactly what he said, but I know he was frustrated yesterday about us wanting to make sure something didn't change since spring training. I hope there's not a need for him tonight and he gets the benefit of a couple days, and Friday he's ready to go." Asked if he's confident that the symptoms are resolved, Showalter replied, "We're not sure about that, but we're sure a concussion's not causing it. A concussion has not caused it." Bud Norris is available out of the bullpen tonight. He would start one of the games this weekend against the Blue Jays if he's not used. Chris Tillman and Ubaldo Jimenez also will start, but Showalter hasn't determined the order. Thursday's open date on the schedule provides some flexibility. Down in Sarasota, Dylan Bundy threw 35 fastballs today. Johan Santana will throw batting practice on Saturday. "That's good," Showalter said. "That's another step for him." Showalter told reporters that Manny Machado had "a good day, felt really good, jogged." "He's doing all activities. The only thing he hasn't done yet really is sprint. I'll leave that in (minor league medical coordinator) Dave Walker's hands. So far, so good," Showalter said. "Dave's one of the best in the game at it and we've had great success turning things over to Dave Walker and leaving him alone, and we'll continue to do that." The Orioles have signed left-hander Anthony Vasquez to minor league deal and he's expected to be assigned to Double-A Bowie after a stint at extended spring training. Vasquez, 27, went 1-6 with an 8.90 ERA in seven starts with the Mariners in 2011, allowing 13 home runs in 29 1/3 innings. He's 32-33 with a 3.78 ERA over five minor league seasons with the Mariners, making 84 starts among his 93 appearances.
