Machado homers on his first night in the Carolina League

He had two hits and scored a run in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game Tuesday night. He got promoted to Single-A Frederick after that game. On Thursday afternoon, he found out he would play in the Futures Game and Thursday night he homered in just his second at-bat in the Carolina League. Just Manny being Manny. As in Manny Machado, the Orioles' top prospect who won't turn 19 until July 6. Machado had homered just once in his last 16 games with Single-A Delmarva, but connected in the third inning at Harry Grove Stadium last night. He went 1-for-4 in his first Keys game as Frederick lost 2-1 to Winston Salem. That Frederick lineup had Steve Bumbry leading off, followed by Jonathan Schoop, Machado and Kipp Schutz. When Tyler Townsend and Trent Mummey return from the disabled list to rejoin the Keys, that could be some lineup they'll have. Plus, Frederick has already qualified for the playoffs by winning the first half. Looks like the second half there with Manny should be pretty exciting as well. It looks like two 2011 Orioles draft picks are now playing with the Gulf Coast League O's and have become the first players from this year's draft to take the field in the organization. Cameron Edman, the club's 29th-round pick out of Gonzaga, is 1-for-5 in two GCL games and has played at catcher and first base. Jerome Pena, the Orioles 38th-round pick out of TCU, has made three starts at second base for the GCL team. He is 5-for-11 with a double and 3 RBIs in three games, going 2-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
