Machado makes extended spring debut on Saturday

BOSTON - Manny Machado made it through his sliding drills today without a hitch, and he's scheduled to play five innings at third base on Saturday in an extended spring training game in Sarasota. Machado also ran the bases again and took batting practice and infield. No issues with his left knee or calf. "I talked to him today," said manager Buck Showalter. "He's upbeat and ready to go." Showalter estimates that Machado will play three to five games at extended spring training before going on an injury rehab assignment, which can last 20 days for a position player. The Orioles are taking the under, hoping that the at-bats already accumulated in simulated games will quicken the pace. Rule 5 pick Michael Almanzar played nine innings at third base today in extended and didn't experience any problems with his left knee. Outfielder Nolan Reimold took 25 swings off a tee and did some light tossing. Dylan Bundy threw 45 pitches - fastballs and changeups - off a full mound. Edgmer Escalona made 25 throws from 90 feet. Outfielder Francisco Peguero took 25 dry swings and 25 off a tee as part of his hitting progression. Veteran reliever Luis Ayala will throw live batting practice on Saturday.
