Machado receives five-game suspension and fine

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has been suspended five games and fined an undisclosed amount for throwing his bat during Sunday's game against the Athletics at Camden Yards. Major League Baseball announced the suspension, which an industry source confirmed earlier today. Machado will appeal the suspension, according to a source, which allows him to remain in the lineup for tonight's game against the Red Sox. machado-argues-a's-sidebar.jpgOakland left-hander Fernando Abad has received a fine for an undisclosed amount after intentionally throwing at Machado in the eighth inning. Abad came inside to Machado twice and the third baseman released his bat on a late swing. Both players were ejected. The Orioles won't be happy that Abad receives only a fine after twice attempting to hit Machado. The plate umpire didn't issue a warning after the first pitch. Machado is batting .229/.283/.336 with three doubles, four home runs and 11 RBIs in 35 games. He's also committed seven errors after winning a Platinum Glove last season. Machado was involved in three incidents over the weekend. He took exception to a tag from A's third baseman Josh Donaldson Friday night, which led to both benches and bullpens emptying. He hit catcher Derek Norris with his backswing on Saturday and infuriated the A's by not apologizing and showing the proper remorse. By sending his bat spiraling toward third baseman Alberto Callaspo on Sunday, Machado again caused the dugouts and bullpens to empty and nearly sparked a brawl between the two teams. Machado, 21, apologized to the Orioles, their fans and the Athletics in separate interviews yesterday, then went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and a double play. The Orioles can't replace Machado on the roster while he serves his suspension, which he hopes to have reduced, but they can bring up another infielder and option a player. Machado arrived at Camden Yards around 1:55 p.m. The Orioles will issue a statement regarding the suspension later today.
