Machado smokes three-run homer as O's score five in ninth to stun Fenway

Down to their last strike, the Orioles erupted for four of their five runs in the top of the ninth to storm back and beat Boston 8-5 in front of a stunned fan base at Fenway Park tonight. Joel Hanrahan came on in the ninth to protect a 5-3 Red Sox lead, but Chris Davis greeted him with a leadoff homer, his fifth, to pull the Orioles within one. After two outs were recorded, Ryan Flaherty singled to left for his first hit of the year, ending an 0-for-17 drought and Alexi Casilla came on to pinch run and then stole second. Nolan Reimold walked and so did Nate McLouth to load the bases, and that brought up Manny Machado, who began tonight batting .200 with just one RBI. Hanrahan then uncorked a wild pitch and the game was suddenly tied. Seconds later, it was dramatically untied as Machado hit a three-run shot over the Green Monster as Fenway fell silent. It was one huge hit by the youngster. The ninth-inning rally kept the Orioles from falling to 3-5 with a four-game losing streak. It turned around what had been a frustrating night featuring another inconsistent Jake Arrieta outing and Tommy Hunter allowing two more homers. Hunter has now allowed three homers over 3 2/3 innings. The Orioles had scored twice in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3 before Boston got to Hunter for a 5-3 lead in the sixth when Daniel Nava and Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit back-to-back two-out homers. Arrieta pitched five innings, allowing three hits and three runs with four walks and two strikeouts. His ERA is 7.20 after two starts as he continues to battle his command, which has been an issue for him throughout his career. Darren O'Day pitched the last of the eighth to get the win and Jim Johnson pitched the ninth to gain a save as the Orioles improved to 4-4 on the season and 1-1 on this important week-long road trip to Boston and New York. It came down to a dramatic ninth inning where the Orioles, led by their 20-year-old third baseman, turned what looked to be a certain loss into the season's most dramatic win.
