Mahoney optioned, Reynolds in lineup

The Orioles have optioned first baseman Joe Mahoney to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for left-hander Zach Britton on the 25-man roster. Steve Johnson remains on the roster and is available to pitch in relief. He's the designated long man. Manager Buck Showalter will work with a three-man bench tonight: Omar Quintanilla, Lew Ford and Taylor Teagarden. Robert Andino is getting the start at second base. Mark Reynolds remains at first base, one night have blasting the umpires. Should be interesting. Mahoney is 0-for-4 in two games with the Orioles. He replaced Reynolds at first base last night. Once the Orioles go back to a four-man bench, which figures to be sooner rather than later, they could recall Ryan Flaherty, who's starting at first tonight at Triple-A Norfolk. That's one possibility. The Orioles are off when Britton's turn comes up again on Thursday, so Showalter can adjust his rotation accordingly. For the Orioles: Nick Markakis RF J.J. Hardy SS Nate McLouth LF Adam Jones CF Matt Wieters C Chris Davis DH Mark Reynolds 1B Manny Machado 3B Robert Andino 2B Zach Britton LHP For the Tigers: Austin Jackson CF Omar Infante 2B Miguel Cabrera 3B Prince Fielder 1B Jhonny Peralta SS Delmon Young DH Alex Avila C Jeff Baker RF Andy Dirks LF Rick Porcello RHP Eight of Wieters' last 10 hits dating back to Aug. 7 have been for extra bases - four doubles and four home runs. Here are the pitching matchups for the Rangers series that begins Monday in Arlington: Monday: Miguel Gonzalez (5-2, 3.38 ERA) vs. Ryan Dempster (1-1, 8.31 ERA) Tuesday: Chris Tillman (5-2, 3.65 ERA) vs. Scott Feldman (6-8, 4.63 ERA) Wednesday: Tommy Hunter (4-7, 5.49 ERA) vs. Derek Holland (7-6, 4.98 ERA) Zach Petersime is starting for Norfolk tonight, making him the 25th different starting pitcher used by the Tides this season to tie the International League record.
