ANAHEIM, Calif. - Mark Trumbo is back in the Orioles lineup today for the first time since July 29. He was on the 10-day disabled list with a right rib cage strain.
Over 103 games, Trumbo is batting .238/.300/.405 with 17 doubles, 17 homers, 50 RBIs and an OPS of .706. He is batting fifth as the designated hitter and struck out swinging his first time up in the second inning.
"It feels really good (to be back)," Trumbo said this morning in the visiting clubhouse. "Really excited to get back out and trying to help the cause."
Trumbo was asked about trying to hit big league pitchers after 10 days of not getting in a game.
"The same challenges everyone has, it's big league pitching," he said. I've done everything I can to prepare. You never quite know until you get out there, but I feel ready to go."
In playing the Angels, Trumbo is facing a former team and his original team. He played here from 2010-2013 and the Angels drafted him in round 18 of the 2004 draft. Plus, he is from Anaheim. He went to Villa Park High School in Orange County about 10 minutes from Angels Stadium.
So for Trumbo, it's nice to get to play at least one game here during this series.
"I spent quite a few years here and have quite a few people here that came to watch. So glad I could sneak a game in here. Should be fun."
O's get lead: Welington Castillo's 12th home run, a solo shot to right-center in the top of the third, provided the Orioles a 1-0 lead this afternoon. Castillo hit a 2-1 fastball for the homer, which was upheld after a crew chief review.
Angels get lead: The Angels got even in the last of the third. Kaleb Cowart came up with a leadoff single and later scored on Andrelton Simmons' sac fly with the bases loaded.
Los Angeles took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. C.J. Cron doubled to start the inning and scored on Cesar Puello's first major league hit, a single to center. Kevin Gausman's pitch count is escalating early in this game - he's at 81 through four innings after throwing 28 in the third and 20 in the fourth.
Cron homers: C.J. Cron's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth - a 436-foot blast to left - added to the Angels lead. That made it 4-1. Gausman was replaced by Miguel Castro after allowing eight hits and four runs over 5 1/3 innings.
