For the second day in a row, the Orioles got a go-ahead homer in the late innings. It led to another important win this afternoon and a three-game sweep on the road of the Washington Nationals.
With the Orioles trailing 4-3 in the eighth, Matt Wieters crushed a two-run homer to center off Blake Treinin. The Orioles went on to win 5-4 to improve to 76-76. They have won 11 of 15 games, and climbed back to .500 for the first time since Aug. 26. The Orioles are now 4-66 when trailing after six innings.
Steve Pearce led off the eighth with a single and then Wieters blasted a 97 mph fastball out to center field with a 100 mph exit speed according to the MASN telecast. It was Wieters' seventh homer, and he had just two RBIs in his previous 24 games to start today.
The Nationals had taken the 4-3 lead in the seventh against Chaz Roe and Mike Wright. Wilson Ramos homered and Yunel Escobar's RBI double made it 4-3. But the Orioles cut down a run at the plate on that double. The relay went center fielder Gerardo Parra to second baseman Jonathan Schoop to Wieters, who made the tag for the out. It was confirmed via replay.
Two batters into today's game, the Orioles had a 1-0 lead on Tanner Roark. Parra doubled to deep center on an 0-1 pitch to start the game and scored on Manny Machado's single to center.
Schoop's two-run homer in the fourth provided the Orioles a 3-0 lead. It scored Wieters, who had singled. Schoop hit a 93 mph fastball out to center field on a 1-0 pitch. He hit his 15th of the year off Roark, the same pitcher he hit a walk-off homer against on July 10 in Baltimore.
Tyler Wilson took a 3-0 lead to the last of the fifth, but Washington scored twice in the inning on Anthony Rendon's sac fly and Yunel Escobar's single. Wilson got a no-decision, going six innings. He gave up six hits and two runs, with two walks and four strikeouts. He threw 98 pitches, and his ERA is 3.60. Roark allowed five hits and three runs over five innings and 82 pitches.
Brad Brach pitched out of a jam in the eighth to hold the one-run lead. In the ninth, Darren O'Day retired the side 1-2-3 to record his third save in this series and sixth of the year.
This was the Orioles' fourth three-game sweep of the season and first on the road. They go 4-2 on the season against the Nationals and are 14-6 since 2012, and 33-23 all-time. The Orioles were able to sweep a series where neither Zach Britton nor Adam Jones were available to play.
Now, the Orioles head to Boston for the final stop on this 10-game road trip. On Friday night at Fenway Park, Kevin Gausman (3-6, 4.26 ERA) pitches against left-hander Rich Hill (1-0, 1.93 ERA).
