SARASOTA, Fla. - Catcher Matt Wieters was removed for a pinch-hitter today in the bottom of the first inning and we're waiting for the Orioles to provide an explanation.
Wieters caught the top half of the inning and made a throw to second base that sailed as Eduardo Nunez slid in safely.
Henry Urrutia pinch-hit for Wieters after Mark Trumbo's two-run single gave the Orioles a 3-1 lead. Twins right-hander Trevor May struck out Urrutia and J.J. Hardy.
Audry Perez replaced Wieters behind the plate. Francisco Pena came in from the bullpen, but rejoined the relievers as Ubaldo Jimenez warmed up for the top of the second inning.
Wieters, who's 2-for-12 this spring, stayed in the dugout until Jimenez retired the Twins in order in the top of the second. He walked alone to the clubhouse with his equipment bag on his shoulder.
Head athletic trainer Richie Bancells checked on Wieters in the dugout, but didn't accompany him to the clubhouse. That's a good sign.
The Twins scored a run off Jimenez in the first on three hits and a walk. He threw 30 pitches, 17 for strikes.
Jimenez walked Kurt Suzuki with two outs to load the bases, but Ryan Sweeney flied to right field.
Wieters never made it to the on-deck circle while the Orioles took a 3-1 lead. Manny Machado doubled with one out, Adam Jones was hit by a pitch and Chris Davis singled to load the bases. Machado scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Trumbo followed with his two-run single and Urrutia came to the plate.
Wieters has been healthy all spring and already caught back-to-back games.
Jimenez threw 16 pitches, 10 strikes in the second. He's up to 46 pitches, 27 for strikes.
Update: Machado's second double of the day scored Alfredo Marte, who reached on an error, and gave the Orioles a 4-1 lead.
Jimenez has thrown 58 pitches in three innings, 35 for strikes. He's retired seven of the last eight Twins.
