Matt Wieters leaves game with hamstring injury

The Orioles need a do-over in tonight's game in Seattle.

Chris Tillman exited after only 2 1/3 innings and catcher Matt Wieters followed him to the dugout with the Orioles behind 5-2.

The Orioles announced that Wieters was removed due to a strained right hamstring, which he apparently suffered while fielding Mark Trumbo's roller in front of the mound. Manager Buck Showalter summoned reliever Brian Matusz, noticed that Wieters was grimacing and made another change.

Caleb Joseph replaced Wieters behind the plate. Wieters will be re-evaluated before Wednesday afternoon's series finale.

The Orioles are off Thursday before beginning their next homestand Friday night against the Athletics.

Wieters was 1-for-2 before the injury. If you're looking for a silver lining, it didn't involve his surgically repaired right elbow.

Tillman took a Robinson Cano line drive off the back of his right shoulder in the first inning, or a spot very close to it, but stayed in the game. He surrendered four runs to wipe out the Orioles' 2-0 lead, which was built by Jonathan Schoop's two-run single.

Nelson Cruz homered off Tillman in the first and Mark Trumbo added a three-run shot. Cano also singled in his next at-bat and is 14-for-31 lifetime against Tillman. He singled off Matusz in the fifth to go 3-for-3 tonight.

Tonight marked Tillman's second-shortest outing of the season. He lasted only 1 1/3 innings on June 21 in Toronto. He hadn't started since July 29 because of a sprained left ankle.

Matusz retired the last two Mariners in the third and struck out the side in the fourth.
