Matusz departs after six shutout innings at Bowie

BOWIE, Md. - Brian Matusz is still working on a shutout tonight at Prince George's Stadium. He just pitched around a one-out error and stolen base to blank Erie in the fifth and is leading 1-0. Matusz got a popout to start the fifth and then No. 7 hitter Andy Ciriaco reached on an error charged to third baseman Carlos Rojas. But Matusz got a strikeout and soft line drive out to end the inning. Through five, he has allowed just two hits and one walk with one strikeout. Only one runner has reached second base for the SeaWolves and that came in this inning on the stolen base. He has thrown 57 pitches, 35 for strikes. Steve Lerud's RBI double in the first has Bowie clinging to the 1-0 edge here. Update: Matusz just pitched a scoreless sixth inning on 13 pitches. He got two groundouts, gave up an infield single and got a popout to end the inning. Erie has hardly hit any balls hard tonight. Velocity-wise, Matusz seems to be 86-88 or so tonight. He has allowed just three hits on 70 pitches through six. Tim Bascom is warming in the Bowie bullpen. Update: Matusz is out of the game after six innings. He threw 70 pitches, 40 for strikes.
