Meisinger replacing Phillips in Orioles bullpen

CLEVELAND - The Orioles are recalling Ryan Meisinger from Triple-A Norfolk and putting him in the bullpen for tonight's series opener against the Indians at Progressive Field.

Meisinger worked a scoreless inning last night at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, throwing 20 pitches, allowing two hits and striking out two batters.

The Orioles had an opening on their 25-man roster after optioning reliever Evan Phillips to Norfolk following Wednesday night's 16-5 loss to the Mets at Camden Yards.

The bullpen continues to hold eight relievers, with the Orioles keeping a three-man bench.

Meisinger, born in Prince Frederick, Md. and drafted in the 11th round in 2015 out of Radford University, has been charged with two runs and four hits in six innings with the Orioles. He was optioned after tossing three scoreless and hitless innings with three strikeouts against the Yankees in the second game of a July 9 doubleheader.

Tides left-hander Luis Gonzalez also was under consideration before the Orioles chose Meisinger. Gonzalez isn't on the 40-man roster, but the club has an opening.

Outfielder Craig Gentry will come off the disabled list and replace Adam Jones, who's going on the three-day bereavement list.

Gentry has recovered from the fractured rib that put him on the disabled list in June. He was batting 244/.306/.301 in 59 games.

Manager Buck Showalter can choose between Gentry, Joey Rickard and Jace Peterson for right field tonight against Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco.

Mark Trumbo figures to remain the designated hitter while playing through the soreness in his right knee.
