Orioles employees will spend next week pitching in at various nonprofits around Baltimore. The organization's first OriolesREACH Week will conclude with its annual collection at Camden Yards to benefit the Maryland Food Bank.
The Orioles On Deck Employee Volunteer Program, presented by Bank of America, will send helpers to a different local organization each day next week.
On Monday, the volunteers will be painting hallways and dormitories at The Baltimore Station, a residential theraputic program that helps homeless veterans break the cycle of poverty and addiction.
Team staff will be at the Maryland Food Bank on Tuesday, repacking dry goods in its warehouse.
OriolesREACH Week continues Wednesday with the Fresh Start Leadership Program at Living Classrooms, a development workforce program for males 17-19 that uses carpentry as a medium for teaching job and life skills. Program participants will become the teachers for the day, instructing the volunteers on how to complete a small woodworking project.
The Oriole Bird will accompany team staffers on Thursday at Moveable Feast, which provides home-delivered, medically tailored meals to those living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The volunteers will plant, weed, harvest and compost the organization's garden plot at the Duncan Street Miracle Garden before delivering food to clients.
The 32nd annual OriolesREACH Food & Funds drive, presented by MASN, Pompeian Olive Oil and WJZ-TV, takes place over the weekend of Aug. 24-26. The Orioles Wives, Oriole Advocates, Von Paris Moving and Storage and the Maryland Food Bank host the event, during which volunteers stationed at each entry gate of Oriole Park will collect non-perishable food items and cash donations. Over the past five seasons, the event has raised more than $150,000 and collected nearly 32,000 pounds of food.
The Maryland Food Bank distributes more than 102,000 meals per day, and more than 37 million meals annually.
