Miguel Gonzalez pitches a gem, Adam Jones drives in two in win over Yankees

For a team that had allowed 28 runs in its last three losses, this pitching performance was needed tonight.

Miguel Gonzalez threw a gem against the New York Yankees, striking out a career-high 10 batters and pitching the Orioles to a 4-3 win to even this series at a victory apiece.

Gonzalez went seven innings, allowing just four hits and one run with one walk to go with the 10 strikeouts. His previous career-high in strikeouts was nine, accomplished three times before - most recently on June 27, 2013 against Cleveland.

In 42 career games against American League East opponents, Gonzalez is now 17-10 with a 3.22 ERA. Gonzalez, who threw 108 pitches tonight, has a 1.42 ERA through two starts this season.

Down 4-1 in the eighth, New York pulled within 4-3 against Kevin Gausman as one run scored on an RBI groundout and the second on an error by left fielder Alejandro De Aza. He dropped a fly ball in deep left for a two-base error that would've ended the inning with the Orioles leading 4-2.

Zach Britton then came on to get Brian McCann for the last out of the eighth. The Orioles closer pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save, getting pinch-hitter Alex Rodriguez to ground out to end the game.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead three batters into the first when the red-hot Adam Jones stayed that way. He hit his fourth homer of the year - and fourth in five games on this homestand - when he connected off a CC Sabathia 1-1 pitch.

Jones drove in the game's second run with a sac fly in the third for his 11th RBI of the year. He began today tied for the AL lead with nine RBIs. The fly ball scored Everth Cabrera, who walked to start the inning and raced to third on a single by Manny Machado.

Jones went 1-for-3. Over his last five games, he is 11-for-17 (.647) with a double, four homers and nine RBIs. He began today leading the AL in slugging at .880 and tied for first with nine RBIs.

The lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth on Caleb Joseph's first RBI of the year. His single to right scored Delmon Young, who led off the frame with an infield single and reached second on a wild pitch. In the seventh, the O's scored one again. Joseph hit his first career triple and scored on Cabrera's sac fly.

The win improved the Orioles to 4-4 as they avoided falling two games under .500 for the first time since they were 5-7 last April 13. The Orioles are 8-3 against New York at Camden Yards since the start of last season.

In the series finale on Wednesday night, Bud Norris (0-1, 24.00 ERA) faces right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (0-0, 5.06 ERA).
