Minor league break-camp rosters (plus notes on Schoop, Monell)

Here are the break-camp rosters for the Orioles' four full-season minor league clubs: Triple-A Norfolk, Double-A Bowie, Single-A Frederick and Single-A Delmarva. These rosters are not final. There will be some changes between now and opening day next Thursday in the minors. The final rosters for the openers will not be set until next Thursday. There are, of course, still several players that will be cut from the Orioles heading to the minors and that will cause some changes. There are still some players that may have to go on disabled lists. But as the clubs begin to head north for opening days, here are the rosters as of today: TRIPLE-A NORFOLK Pitchers: Nick Additon, Tim Alderson, Mike Belfiore, Brad Brach, Kelvin De La Cruz, Eddie Gamboa, Brock Huntzinger, Steve Johnson, Chris Jones, Mike Wright, Suk-min Yoon. Norfolk, managed by Ron Johnson, hosts Charlotte at 7:05 p.m. Bowie, managed by Gary Kendall, hosts Harrisburg at 6:35 p.m. Frederick, managed by Luis Pujols, plays at Lynchburg at 6:05 p.m. Delmarva, managed by Ryan Minor opens at Asheville at 7:05 p.m. The Orioles announced this afternoon that Monell cleared waivers and was outrighted to the Norfolk roster. He had been designated for assigment on Monday and now will stay with the organization. Two pitchers not listed on rosters right now are Luis Ayala and Zach Clark. Ayala was just signed and will stay in Sarasota to pitch and build up some innings. Clark will stay at extended spring training to work on the knuckleball. The scoop on Schoop: The latest indication that Jonathan Schoop is likely to begin the season on the O's roster came in this tweet today from Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com: "Sources: #Orioles plan on Schoop making team, alternating at second with Lombardozzi and third with Flaherty." Under this plan, Schoop would be playing every day, at least until Manny Machado returns from the disabled list. Some fans have expressed concerns about Schoop and service time and I have wondered why. Schoop could play every day the next two seasons and still would likely not be arbitration eligible through Super 2 status after the 2015 season. He could not be a free agent until at least after the 2019 season. If he gets sent to the minors later this year at some point, that could become until not after the 2020 season. The Orioles are in win-now mode. They just spent $50 million on a free agent pitcher and have taken the payroll over $100 million. To me, that trumps any concerns right now over Schoop's service time. The O's are playing to win and they appear to believe Schoop's big spring training has earned him a spot on the roster right now. Service time issues are for losing teams, that's the message I get from this potential move with Schoop.
