Minor league notes on Wright, Jones, Esposito, Marin and more (Ortiz note)

Right-hander pitcher Mike Wright, the Orioles third-round pick out of East Carolina in 2011, has put together a very solid month of July at Double-A Bowie. Wright is 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA in five starts this month. Over 29 2/3 innings, he has walked just six and fanned 26. This followed a June where his ERA was 6.33 in four starts. In 20 starts on the season for the Baysox, Wright is 8-2 with an ERA of 3.57 and has fanned 101 over 108 2/3 innings. Also at Bowie, Eduardo Rodriguez allowed six runs over four innings yesterday. The 20-year-old lefty had given up just six earned runs over 17 innings in his three previous Baysox starts. He is 1-2 with a 5.88 in five starts at Bowie since moving up from Single-A Frederick. Rodriguez has fanned 24 in 26 innings with a batting average against of just .237. Left-handed pitcher Chris Jones, the player the Orioles acquired from Atlanta for reliever Luis Ayala on April 10, has put together back-to-back strong months for Triple-A Norfolk. The 24-year-old Jones has pitched to an ERA of 1.39 over 12 games in June and July. He is 3-2 with a 2.63 ERA on the season. Lefty batters are hitting just .178 against him and right-handed hitters are batting .314. Lefty pitcher Zach Britton has had a strange few weeks. From June 18 through July 4 he pitched to an ERA of 2.74 over four starts for the Orioles. But now, over his last three starts with Norfolk he is 0-2 with an ERA of 13.14 and has given up 21 hits over 12 1/3 innings. Lefty pitcher Ashur Tolliver, who missed all of last season due to injury, has pitched quite well since recently moving from Single-A Delmarva to Frederick. He is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in five games over 13 innings. He was a fifth round pick in 2009. Two hitters that have had good months on the farm include Jason Esposito at Frederick and Adrian Marin at Delmarva. Esposito was the club's second round pick out of Vanderbilt in 2011. Batting just .213 with Frederick through the end of June, in 20 games this month, Esposito is batting .312 with one homer, 13 RBIs and a .775 OPS. With Nicky Delmonico traded, it looks like he'll get more regular starts now there at third base. Marin is hitting .321 with a homer, five RBIs and a .776 OPS this month. The O's third round pick last June out of a Miami-area high school, the 19-year-old Marin is batting .279 on the season. That is a pretty solid number for such a young player in his first full pro season and the O's by design have been batting him eighth in the order there. Ortiz note: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe just posted this on Twitter: After reviewing the situation today, MLB has decided not to suspend David Ortiz for his dugout tirade according to a source. If true, then Ortiz can do what he did, yell expletives at the umpire - all in full view of the cameras - then be defiant in the postgame interview and not get suspended. That's outrageous.
