More on Krehbiel, Vespi, Owings, Nevin and Jones

The Orioles are going to be without reliever Joey Krehbiel for at least 15 days due to right shoulder inflammation. However, they don’t seem concerned that his absence from the bullpen will be extensive.

“Hopefully, it’s just a couple weeks and give him time to rest it and work in the training room with Brian (Ebel) and the guys, and it won’t be too long,” manager Brandon Hyde said today.

Left-hander Nick Vespi returns to the Orioles with his 0.00 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings with Triple-A Norfolk. His major league debut consisted of two scoreless innings before the Orioles optioned him.

“He’s had an incredible year in Norfolk,” Hyde said. “It was just one of those situations where we needed to send him out last time out just from a numbers standpoint and what we needed in the bullpen the next day, unfortunately, because he threw the ball so well for us. So, we’re happy to have him back.

“With the new rules this year, it’s unfortunate that you have to wait a little longer to bring guys back, unless there’s an injury, but also, as you start getting more talented in your upper levels, start getting more talented in the big leagues, you start having to make tougher decisions. But as well is having talented guys in Triple-A to call up, so we’re excited to bring him back up as a bullpen option for us. He’s going to be live for us tonight.”

Vespi arrived in the clubhouse expecting to be available tonight.

“It feels great, I’m super excited again like I was the first time, and hopefully this time can be a little bit longer,” said Vespi, who threw 11 pitches last night while retiring the side in order with two strikeouts.

“I don’t look too far into that because I focus on the now when I’m out there pitching, but we’ll see what happens this time.”

Infielder Chris Owings is on the bereavement list - the club isn’t offering details while respecting his privacy - and he’s allowed to be away for three to seven days. Hyde said it probably will just be “a couple days.”

Tyler Nevin was recalled after he slashed .319/.406/.506 with six doubles, a triple, three home runs and 21 RBIs in 106 plate appearances with Norfolk. He’s played in 19 games with the Orioles and gone 14-for-63 (.222) with a double and home run.

Nevin hit a two-run homer last night and was 2-for-5 with two RBIs the previous game. He went 7-for-16 with the Orioles from May 17-20.

“I was just told to come up. I’ll be ready for whatever’s thrown my way,” he said.

“I feel good. Had a few days off when I got optioned and then there was a rainout, so I was getting back into it for a little bit, just get back in a rhythm. I just want to carry what I was doing when I left this place.

“The entire time up here I felt like I was seeing the ball well. On that road trip I didn’t have any hits, I felt a little off. I didn’t feel like I was getting overmatched or anything. I was out of whack, and I felt like the last homestand before I got optioned I was able to get back on track, get more into my rhythm. I felt really good before I was sent down.”

Nevin came out of a recent game at Norfolk after being hit with a pitch on the left knee, but he was in the lineup the following night.

Hyde is able to rest Ramón Urías, who turned 28 years old today. Urías started both games of Saturday’s doubleheader in Boston.

“I wanted to get him off his feet for a night,” Hyde said.

The Orioles put infielder Jahmai Jones on unconditional release waivers, but they can re-sign him if he clears. The door remains open for his return as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

“He’s still a young guy, hopefully he’s got a long career ahead of him,” Hyde said.
