New Oriole Garden unveiled at Camden Yards (with video)

It's safe to say Camden Yards has seen its fair share of showers this season.

Bring on the flowers.

For those fans who adhere to the age-old adage, there is a bit of good news. Thanks in large part to the National Wildlife Foundation and the Orioles, the flowers are here, and they are beautiful.

Earlier today, both parties presented the new Oriole Garden, planted by members of the National Wildlife Federation's Grow Together campaign. The initiative is a collaboration of Baltimore residents eager to improve the quality of the city by creating backyard sanctuaries, beautifying neighborhoods and schools, reducing pollution and furthering a sense of community.

The garden is planted on the grounds outside Camden Yards. Using native plants, the garden hopes to attract oriole birds - no, not the O's mascot - as well as other local birds and butterflies. Fans attending Orioles games will have an opportunity to see the garden and learn a little about how they replicate wildlife friendly gardens at home and in their community.

Orioles radio broadcaster Fred Manfra of 105.7 The Fan, hosted the ceremony, giving thanks to all of those involved in the process, from designing the layout of the garden, to funding the project, and particularly the ones who hiked up their sleeves and took part in the planting of all of the flowers.

The new garden includes 12,000 native plants, many of which will produce orange flowers - perfect for Birdland during baseball season and the warm-weather months. With its prominent location at Camden Yards and educational signage, the garden will also help fans learn more about orioles, native plants and how to create their own backyard wildlife sanctuaries.

It's always hard to imagine ways to improve on baseball's most beautiful ballpark, but the new Oriole Garden is certainly a sight to see. Be sure to check it out the next time you visit the Yard. In the meantime, check out this video recap of the ceremony and pictures from the unveiling on the MASNOrioles Facebook page.
