Notes on Chris Davis and David Lough (and Oliver Drake)

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis has been named to the Sporting News 2015 American League All-Star team. Davis and the Tigers' Miguel Cabrera were co-winners at the position.

Executives voted for players in each league.

Davis, who received the same honor in 2013, batted .262/.361/.562 with 31 doubles, 47 home runs and 117 RBIs in 160 games. He led the majors in homers and strikeouts (208).

Davis, a pending free agent, is the lone Oriole on the team. Third baseman Manny Machado and closer Zach Britton received votes.

Other winners include Yankees catcher Brian McCann, Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis, Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts, Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson, Angels outfielder Mike Trout, Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista, Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain, Mariners designated hitter Nelson Cruz, Astros starter Dallas Keuchel and Yankees reliever Dellin Betances.

* Orioles outfielder David Lough is included on the list of players who qualified for arbitration this winter based on their Super Two status.

Most players are arbitration-eligible for three years, but Lough has gained an extra year based on his service time.

MLBTradeRumors.com projects that Lough will make $800,000 next season after he earned $526,000 in 2014 while batting .201/.241/.313 in 84 games. The Orioles designated him for assignment on Aug. 14, outrighted him to Triple-A Norfolk nine days later and selected his contract on Sept. 24.

Lough is a candidate to be non-tendered this winter.

The Orioles' list of arbitration-eligible players also includes - in order of service time - Brian Matusz, Nolan Reimold, Paul Janish, Chris Tillman, Miguel Gonzalez, Ryan Flaherty, Britton, Brad Brach and Machado.

* Major League Baseball will announce the winners of the 2015 Reliever of the Year awards tonight before Game 2 of the World Series.

One reliever is chosen from each league. Britton deserves consideration, of course, but isn't likely to win it.

* Minor League Baseball named Triple-A Norfolk closer Oliver Drake the best reliever for 2015.

Drake, 28, appeared in 42 games with the Tides this year and went 1-2 with a 0.82 ERA and 23 saves in 23 chances over 44 innings. He allowed 23 hits, struck out 66 batters and held opponents to a .151 average.

The Orioles selected Drake in the 43rd round of the 2008 draft out of the Naval Academy. He was named co-winner of the organization's minor league Pitcher of the Year Award in 2015 with Double-A Bowie reliever Mychal Givens.

Drake posted a 2.87 ERA and struck out 17 batters in 15 2/3 innings with the Orioles this season. He also walked nine batters.

Drake won't have a spot waiting for him in the bullpen next spring. He'll have to earn it, especially with Givens' emergence this year.
