Notes on today's game and Wynns' arrival in camp

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are listing Brad Brach, Jed Bradley, Joe Gunkel, Zach Stewart and Logan Verrett today among their relievers behind starter Kevin Gausman.

The Dominican Republic is starting right-hander Samuel Deduno, 33, who's pitched for the Rockies, Padres, Twins and Astros from 2010-15. He appeared in 10 games last summer with the Orioles' Gulf Coast League team following hip surgery and allowed three earned runs in 18 innings before they released him in August.

Francisco Peña is catching today while his father, Tony, manages the Dominican team.

Austin Wynns may get another chance to catch today after reporting to major league camp. He actually appeared in one spring training game last year, on St. Patrick's Day, after being summoned from minor league complex.

Wynns was late coming to Sarasota because of an ankle injury that prevented him from being a non-roster invitee in February.

"It's awesome the first time being here," he said. "Yeah, the ankle injury, but you know what? I'm still glad that I'm here, and to see everybody and see how they act and stuff like that, I feel blessed."

Wynns suffered the injury during a Dominican Winter League game.

"Just did something not smart," he said. "I was on second base, bases loaded, line drive back to the pitcher, took one step right and then leaped back with the same foot. Should have dove. It happens. I rolled it two years ago, too. Just ... right foot, man.

"As soon as it happened, of course I was bummed. I was like, 'First invite and now I'm not going anymore.' But I'm here now. Here and 100 percent and ready to go. Go as hard as I can."

Wynns caught Logan Ondrusek yesterday in the ninth inning at Lakeland.

"It was a good little flush," he said. "It was cool. And the DR definitely prepared me for all this. The Dominican was great baseball, great level of play, and I would go back for sure."

Manager Buck Showalter has been eager to watch Wynns at work. The reports are good and he'd like to begin the evaluation process up close.

"Awesome," Wynns said. "I don't look at much of those things. I stay away from all of that, but that's great to hear. Whenever I get in there, I'll do the best that I can and be the type of person who I am. And hopefully he likes it."
