Notes on union meeting, Bundy, Rodriguez and Gausman (and Cruz)

SARASOTA, Fla. - The clubhouse is now closed to the media while the Orioles have their annual union meeting. Former Orioles filled the place this morning, including Jeffrey Hammonds, Phil Bradley, Bobby Bonilla and Rick Helling, who all work for the Major League Baseball Players Association. Hall of Famer Dave Winfield and former Expos pitcher Steve Rogers also were in the house, along with Mike Myers - the former left-handed reliever, not the comedic actor. At first, I thought the Orioles were holding tryouts. Hammonds embraced Alan Mills, his former teammate who's now the pitching coach at Single-A Delmarva. Bradley chatted up hitting coach Jim Presley, his teammate in Seattle. Winfield sat next to Jonathan Schoop and had a long conversation with him. Scoop later asked for a photo. Dylan Bundy will throw from 150 feet again today, but he's adding a new twist as he continues his recovery from ligament-reconstructive surgery on his right elbow. Bundy will move back up to 90 feet and make another 20 throws. The current plan calls for Bundy to throw again on Tuesday and Thursday, and he could be extended to 180 feet during the latter session. "Sometime in the next 10 days will be 180," he said. "It's going good. It feels good to throw. It doesn't hurt, so I guess that's good." Bundy estimated that he's throwing with 75 percent effort. "I want to throw harder, but I know I'm not supposed to," he said. "They said right now it's a touchy stage because people start feeling pretty good about their arm and they can throw harder, but if I just keep it at 75 percent, I should be fine." Today marks another day of pitchers throwing live batting practice. Hitters are allowed to swing. Tommy Hunter, Troy Patton, Brad Brach, Brock Huntzinger, Bud Norris, Ryan Webb, Zach Britton, Tim Alderson, Nick Additon, Darren O'Day, Evan Meek, Wei-Yin Chen, T.J. McFarland and Tim Berry will take the mound today. Suk-min Yoon and Ubaldo Jimenez aren't listed on the workout sheet that's distributed to the media, but they could throw bullpen sessions without hitters. Eduardo Rodriguez took the mound yesterday and shattered one of Nolan Reimold's bats. "Hitters hate this," manager Buck Showalter said. "Nicky (Markakis) walks by me and goes, 'Really?'" Kevin Gausman also looked nasty. Every time he throws, whether it's a side sesson or BP, someone inevitably walks up to me and raves about him. Note: I'm hearing that Nelson Cruz's physical is still scheduled for today. He flew into Miami yesterday and drove to Sarasota. The Orioles weren't sure whether the physical would be pushed back to Monday.
