Notes on Hanrahan, Weeks and Yoon

Do the Orioles retain interest in free agent reliever Joel Hanrahan? Well, they're checking his medical records again, according to an industry source. They also reviewed his records during the winter. Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette has declined comment when asked whether the club scouted Hanrahan, 32, last Thursday while he threw at the University of Tampa. Approximately 20 teams were represented. Duquette refuses to talk about specific free agents. Hanrahan, a two-time All-Star closer with the Pirates, underwent ligament-reconstructive surgery on his right elbow last May after making nine appearances with the Red Sox. His fastball reportedly topped out at 93 mph last week. Down on the farm, Jemile Weeks left today's game for Triple-A Norfolk after three at-bats, with Quintin Berry replacing him in left field. Weeks isn't headed to Toronto and the Orioles aren't poised to make another roster move. I'm told that Weeks has a "minor medical issue." Oh well, it was fun to speculate for a few minutes. Suk-min Yoon went five innings today and allowed two unearned runs and eight hits, with two walks and one strikeout. He threw 87 pitches, 57 for strikes, and lowered his ERA from 9.49 to 7.79 ERA. Yoon, who got 10 ground ball outs, has allowed two earned runs (four total) and 16 hits over 10 2/3 innings in his last two starts. Cord Phelps hit his first home run today. The Orioles announced a series of license plate online auctions through www.orioles.com/plates in honor of the club's 60th anniversary. The plates feature the popular cartoon bird logo. Beginning today until April 30, Maryland residents can visit www.orioles.com/plates to bid on license plate numbers 1966, 1970 and 1983, the club's world championship seasons. These auctions will end starting at 10 p.m. that night. Beginning May 5, remaining plates numbered 1955-2014 will be auctioned off by decade for one week at a time. 1955-1959: May 5-11 1960-1965, 1967-1969: May 12-18 1971-1979: May 19-25 1980-1982, 1984-1989: May 26-June 1 1990-1999: June 2-8 2000-2014: June 9-15 Proceeds from the auctions will benefit the Orioles Charitable Foundation, which has already raised more than $66,000 since the debut of the club's license plate program in 2012.
