Noteworthy achievements from last night

CHICAGO - Before we turn our focus to tonight's game, let's continue to linger around last night's 10-inning victory. I'm just not ready to let go. According to Elias, Matt Wieters' grand slam in the 10th inning was just the fifth in extra innings for the Orioles in the last 50 years, and the second against the White Sox. All of them came in the 10th. The others were produced by Brooks Robinson (July 7, 1970 versus New York), Tommy Davis (July 27, 1975 at Milwaukee), Joe Nolan (August 24, 1982 versus Toronto) and Harold Baines (May 4, 1999 versus the White Sox.) The Orioles were 2-85 last year when trailing after the eighth inning. They picked up their first win this season under those circumstances. The six-run 10th marked the most runs scored by the Orioles in one inning since they tallied six in the second inning on August 26, 2011 against the Yankees. According to Elias, the six runs in the 10th were the most by the Orioles in an extra inning since they scored six in the 14th at Boston on June 25, 1970. Anybody remember that game? Nolan Reimold has hit three home runs this year, with each coming in the top of the ninth inning. According to Elias, the last major leaguer to hit his first three homers of a season in the ninth inning or later was Philadelphia's Ross Gload in 2010. Reimold has homered in three straight games, the longest streak by an Oriole since Wieters on September 13-15, 2011. I told you this morning that the Orioles lead the majors with 18 home runs. I failed to mention that they also lead the American League in hits (95) and are fourth in runs scored (50). The Orioles have hit nine home runs in the seventh inning or later to lead the majors. All four of Adam Jones' home runs this season have tied the game or given the Orioles a lead. Jones is batting .458 (11-for-24) with a double, four homers and four RBIs with nobody on base. With men on base, he's batting .176 (3-for-17) with a double and one RBI. More Jones: He's batting .333 (10-for-30) with two doubles and two homers in 31 plate appearances (.994 OPS) against right-handed pitching. More Wieters: He's batting .143 (1-for-7) with runners in scoring position, but he has six RBIs with the help of last night's grand slam. The Orioles are 11-2 in their last 13 road series openers dating back to last season's All-Star break. They've won the last five series openers on the road and are 7-1 in the last eight since kicking off a four-game sweep of the Twins on August 22, 2011. Last night marked the 15th time in Nick Markakis' 956 major league games that he struck out three times. It didn't happen since August 20, 2010 against the Rangers' C.J. Wilson.
