O'Day staying on rehab assignment for another game (O's up 1-0)

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Orioles reliever Darren O'Day will stay with Single-A Frederick and pitch again on Thursday in Potomac. He could be activated a few days later.

O'Day walked three batters last night in two-thirds of an inning and was charged with three runs after he left the game.

"He felt good," said manager Buck Showalter. "One of them (walks) wasn't. He's going to have at least one more outing. But he felt good. Obviously, his command was off a little bit, but he felt good.

"He's close. Hopefully, one more outing. We're kind of leaning on him with it."

Closer Zach Britton tossed another scoreless inning last night for Triple-A Norfolk, striking out a batter and hitting one. He induced two more ground balls.

"Almost going too smooth, huh?" Showalter said. "Those guys are around the corner."

Outfielder Colby Rasmus isn't as close. He's 0-for-10 with five strikeouts in three combined games at Double-A Bowie and Single-A Frederick.

"He got his at-bats in," Showalter said. "Not a whole lot of production yet as far as statistically, but he's getting his reps in. He's had a long time off."

The Orioles chose University of North Carolina catcher Cody Roberts in the 11th round today, UC Santa Barbara shortstop Clay Fisher in the 12th and Sam Houston State third baseman Andrew Fregia in the 13th.

Showalter has been paying attention. He knew the starting time today and has jots down the names.

"I do it every year," he said. "I just enjoy it. Those are ours. We've got quite a stake in that draft."

Asked about center fielder Adam Jones getting close to a few balls lately that he hasn't been able to catch, including a shallow fly ball last night that caused him to pull up early, Showalter said, "He probably has. I certainly wouldn't broadcast it, I wouldn't talk about it.

"Adam's a guy who plays every day. Obviously not quite as much as he has in the past. He's made some adjustments in his position and what have you. Nobody's as good as they were when they were 22, but there are some things he brings with experience.

"It's something that everybody has a point, all of us - players, coaches, managers - there are some adjustments that have to be made in the way we approach things. ... I like the way he's doing most things."

According to STATS, catcher Austin Wynns is the 77th Orioles player to collect a hit in his major league debut and the first since Anthony Santander on Aug. 18, 2017 against the Angels.

Wynns is the first to do it in his first plate appearance since Hyun Soo Kim on April 10, 2016 versus the Rays.

Other notable Orioles to collect a hit in their first career plate appearance include Joey Rickard on April 4, 2016 against the Twins, Jonathan Schoop on Sept. 25, 2013 versus the Blue Jays, José Bautista on April 7, 2004 against the Red Sox and current assistant hitting coach Howie Clark on July 16, 2002 versus the Mariners.

According to STATS, 27 Orioles have notched a hit in their first career plate appearance since 1974.
