The schedule has teased the 40th anniversary celebration of the 1970 World Series Championship team for months, but the Orioles announced the details of that celebration today, letting you know just what you have to look forward to.
The celebration will take place this Saturday, June 26, prior to and during the O's 4:05 p.m. game against the neighboring Washington Nationals. Gates will open at 2:30 p.m.
You'll want to get to the park early, as the O's will hold an Alumni Press Conference from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. with 1970 teammates Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson, Paul Blair, Boog Powell, Davey Johnson, and Jim Palmer, as well as 1970 manager of the Birds, Earl Weaver.
Also from 2:30 to 3:15, the O's will have three locations designated on the lower concourse where select members of the 1970 team will sign autographs for fans. Look for Fred Beene, Don Buford, Andy Etchebarren, Bobby Floyd, Bobby Grich, Dick Hall, Dave Leonhard, Tom Phoebus, Merv Rettenmund, Pete Richert and Eddie Watt.
From 2:30 to 6:00 p.m., don't miss the 1970 Anniversary memorabilia sale to take place on the lower concourse near Gate D. At the sale, you'll be able to purchase autographed, limited edition photos from the Orioles' private collection of 1970 Hall of Famers.
O's fans will also have the chance to take home limited edition prints autographed by all 1970 players in attendance this weekend - And by "limited edition", they mean that only 50 of these prints will be autographed by every returning member of the team and available for purchase!
Finally, you'll be able to purchase baseballs autographed by various members of the 1970 team and sold "grab-bag" style at the memorabilia sale on the lower concourse.
Meanwhile, a pregame ceremony will begin on the field at 3:30 p.m. to include a video tribute, followed by the 1970 team being introduced on the field. Select members of the 1970 team will also throw out ceremonial first pitches.
As for the current Orioles team, they'll wear throwback uniforms from the 1970 season, and the Nats will join in the festivities by wearing the uniforms of the 1970 Washington Senators.
Following the celebration, the O's will auction off autographed and game-worn hats and jerseys from both teams, as well as helmets from the Orioles and autographed jerseys from players on the 1970 team. Proceeds from the auction - which will run from 6:00 p.m. Saturday through 6:00 p.m. on Monday, July 5 - will benefit the Orioles Charitable Foundation.
