O's erupt for seven-run first and beat Oakland 12-5 (with quotes)

OAKLAND, Calif. - After coming up a run short and blowing a late lead last night, the Orioles started the game tonight like a team still smarting from that loss.

They scored seven runs in the top of the first and produced 20 hits on their way to a 12-5 win over the Athletics in front of 29,742 at Oakland Colisuem.

The Orioles hit eight doubles tonight, one off a team record. They had eight doubles in one game each in 1996 and 2009. The O's went 9-for-18 with runners in scoring position.

The Orioles produced the 12th first inning in team history scoring seven or more runs. The last time they did it was on May 20, 2008 at Yankee Stadium. This was the fifth time they scored seven or more in the first without a home run.

The O's hit A's starter Sean Manaea hard. Five of the six hits they got off him registered exit velocities of between 98 and 105 mph. Manaea retired just one batter - and that was on an out at the plate.

The seven runs tie for their biggest inning of the year and matches the highest run total for any one previous game on this road trip. They beat the A's Thursday night 7-2.

Manaea had allowed 12 runs over 6 1/3 innings his previous two starts and he didn't fare any better here, allowing six hits and six runs in 1/3 of an inning. He was replaced by right-hander Michael Bradley, who allowed the seventh run of the inning.

Shortstop Tim Beckham began the game with a walk and scored on Manny Machado's RBI double. Jonathan Schoop singled to put two on for Adam Jones, who doubled to left. Machado scored, but Schoop was cut down at the plate 7-6-2.

Trey Mancini's RBI single made it 3-0 and Chris Davis singled home the fourth run, ending Manaea's night. A Welington Castillo fielder's choice grounder made it 5-0 and Beckham's two-run double to left-center plated the sixth and seventh runs.

The Orioles batted 11 men and had eight hits in 10 at-bats in the top of the first. The A's fans cheered Bradley when he recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the second.

Staked to the big lead, Dylan Bundy allowed a two-run homer to Khris Davis in the last of the first, his 32nd. The inning ended with the Orioles leading 7-2. Matt Olson hit a solo homer off Bundy in the second to make it 7-3.

Jones, who is having a big series, added a two-run single in the fourth for a three-RBI night. In this series, Jones is 6-for-13 with two homers and seven RBIs.

The Orioles scored three times in the ninth to close out the scoring after the A's had pulled to within 10-5, scoring twice off Miguel Castro in the eighth.

Beckham went 4-for-5 with three doubles, a walk and three RBIs. He is batting .531 (26-for-49) in 12 games with the Orioles with 12 extra-base hits. He's hit safely in all 12 games and has nine multi-hit games.

Bundy pitched six innings and matched his career high of 10 strikeouts set just Monday at Anaheim. He allowed seven hits and three runs. Bundy is 12-8 with an ERA of 4.17. In five starts since the All-Star break, he is 4-0 with an ERA of 3.62.

Bundy tied his career high getting 17 swings-and-misses on 104 pitches. He got swinging strikes on 11 of 35 sliders and his fastball touched 95 mph. He has pitched to an ERA of 2.14 his last three starts with four walks and 25 strikeouts over 21 innings.

The Orioles improved to 58-59 by winning for the 10th time in their past 15 games. They are 3-3 on this road trip, which has four games to go. Oakland lost for the sixth time in nine games to fall to 51-66.

In Sunday's series finale, Jeremy Hellickson (1-1, 2.08 ERA with the Orioles) faces righty Kendall Graveman (2-3, 4.97 ERA).

Manager Buck Showalter on the first inning: "Well, you enjoy it because of what happens later in the game. You know they're going to make a run at you, which they did. They've got a lot of players who are locked into every at-bat, and they want to make their place ... but I thought the biggest hit of the night was Adam's hit in the fourth inning because they're getting ready to be a momentum swing there and it knocked a little starch out. That's a typical Adam Jones base hit."

Showalter on Beckham: "We're not going to talk about him. Timmy likes playing outside, it looks like."

Bundy on another 10-strikeout game: "Most of them probably off my slider, but it was execution and a good game plan with my catcher back there. Me and Welly, we were really throwing the slider into lefties and away from righties today. After they didn't let many fastballs go by without swinging at them, so we had to constantly mix pitches tonight."

Beckham on a change of scenery helping him: "I'm not thinking about it, man. I just go day to day, man, and at-bat to at-bat. Just trying to have good at-bats. It feels good. Playing more winning baseball than we are losing, so it's always fun to win."

Beckham on seeing the ball well right now: "Yeah, I'm seeing it well. It's fun, you know. You're playing good and your team's playing winning baseball, it's always fun. The end goal is to win ballgames and be in the playoffs. That's what we're shooting for. Every time you get up, you want to put together a good at-bat, a quality at-bat. Just see pitches, man, and try to stay disciplined and don't help the pitcher out. If you have a pitcher like today, you need to focus and not let him have (an advantage)."

More notes: Beckham's 12-game hitting streak matches his career high. This was his third career four-hit game and first-ever with three doubles. Beckham has four straight multi-hit games. In that span, he is 10-for-17 with four doubles, a triple and three RBIs.

The Orioles, eight doubles is their most since June 14, 2012 against Pittsburgh. The eight doubles allowed by the A's was a team record, the previous mark being seven on 12 different occasions. The Orioles went 20-for-43 as a team but didn't hit a single home run.
