O's face Blue Jays youngster tonight in series finale

Some of you think the Orioles rush some pitchers to the major leagues. Drew Hutchison, tonight's Toronto starter against the Orioles, is just 21 years old and with just six career starts as high as Double-A on his resume before April 21. He made his major league debut then against Kansas City and got the win despite allowing five runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. He began this year at Double-A New Hampshire, going 2-1 with a 2.16 ERA. Hutchison was not a high draft pick and was taken in round 15 in 2009. He began last year with the Lansing Lugnuts in low Single-A ball and pitched at three levels, ending 2011 in the Eastern League. He made his last three starts of last season in Double-A and his first three of this season there before joining the Blue Jays. He has just those six starts, covering 31 2/3 innings, at that level and is 5-1 with a 1.70 ERA in those outings. Hutchison faced the Orioles in spring training once, on March 12, and gave up two hits and one earned run over two innings that day. In 46 career minor league appearances, he is 18-9 with an ERA of 2.49 in 235 innings. He has walked 57 and fanned 246 in that time. The Orioles have scored just 23 runs with a team batting average of .208 over the last eight games but are 5-3 in the eight and can sweep this series tonight. Brian Matusz is a grizzled vet next to Hutchinson, but both young hurlers are throwing well early in this game which was scoreless tonight heading to the last of the fourth.
