O's game blog: David Hess re-enters rotation, faces Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas - After the Orioles allowed a season high in runs last night and lost 17-8 at Texas, the clubs play the second game of a four-game series tonight at Globe Life Park. The Orioles lost 15-7 to Kansas City on May 8, and that was the most runs allowed in a game until Thursday night.

Here are a few more notes on last night's game:

* There were six homers in the game, three by each team. Jurickson Profar hit a 436-foot three-run homer for the Rangers, and Rougned Odor hit one that went 429 feet. Mark Trumbo's homer in the fifth was his 13th of the year. It ended a 17-game homerless run for Trumbo but was also his 10th homer in his past 39 games.

* Odor tied a Texas team record by drawing five walks. In his other plate appearance, he hit that homer. He became the fourth player since 1908 with a homer and five walks in one game. The others are Seattle's Edgar Martinez on June 24, 2004, Oakland's Mark McGwire on April 26, 1997 and Atlanta's Hank Aaron on July 11, 1972. Odor is the only member of the group to accomplish that in a nine-inning game.

* While the 17 runs was a season-high allowed by Orioles pitching, the runs total and 18 hits were both season highs for Texas. The Rangers had not scored so many runs since a 17-7 win on Aug. 19, 2017, versus the White Sox.

* Texas had seven doubles, the most the Rangers have had in a game since Sept. 6, 2016. The Rangers' 10 extra-base-hit total is their highest since July 25, 2011. The Rangers are averaging 6.8 runs per game in the second half.

* The Orioles' 10 walks allowed tied a season high reached two times earlier in the year. The team ERA rose from 4.83 to 4.94 after O's pitching allowed 16 earned runs.

* New Oriole Jonathan Villar singled in his first Orioles at-bat and went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles. He is batting .309 (17-for-55) against the American League this year.

* The Rangers' Elvis Andrus has hit safely in 13 straight games, the longest active streak in the majors and longest by a Ranger this year. He's batting .382/.417/.600 (17-for-55) during the streak.

* O's right-hander Andrew Cashner took his 10th loss as he allowed a career-high 10 runs in just 1 2/3 innings. Cashner did this pitching in a ballpark where he went 5-5 with a 2.72 ERA last year when he pitched for the Rangers.

On the mound tonight, right-hander David Hess (2-5, 5.94 ERA) makes his 10th start and 12th appearance. Hess had his last start on June 29, when he allowed six runs over 5 2/3 versus the Los Angeles Angels.

In his first five major league starts, Hess posted a 3.07 ERA. But in his last four he had a 10.70 ERA. In those games, he pitched 17 2/3 innings, allowing 26 hits and 21 runs. Hess has gone 3-2 with a 3.15 ERA over nine starts this year for Triple-A Norfolk.

Right-hander Ariel Jurado (1-1, 4.22 ERA) makes his third start for Texas. In his first on May 19 versus the White Sox, he gave up four runs in 4 2/3 innings. But on July 28 against Houston, he allowed just one run and two hits over six innings.
