O's game blog: It's Tillman against Price tonight in Detroit

So, for the Orioles, is the bigger issue right now the pitching or the hitting?

Both have their share of issues. The offense has scored three runs or fewer in six of its last seven games and nine of its last 11. The O's have scored just 19 runs in their last nine losses.

As for the pitchers, the starting rotation has not been good enough. After Ubaldo Jimenez's outing last night, O's starters have given up six runs or more in three of the last six games.

For the year, the O's rotation ERA of 4.29 ranks 11th in the American League and the O's were fifth last year at 3.61. Also O's starting pitchers have allowed 71 homers and that is the most in the league.

The Orioles fell under .500 at 44-45 with last night's loss. Another loss tonight and they'd fall two games under .500 for the first time since June 10 at 28-30. The Orioles have lost three in a row, six of seven and 11 of their past 14 games heading into tonight's game at Detroit.

Chris Tillman (6-7, 5.40 ERA) makes his 18th start tonight and will face Tigers left-hander David Price (9-2, 2.38 ERA).

Over his last three starts, Tillman is 1-0 with a 2.04 ERA. In 17 2/3 innings he has allowed 22 hits but no homers and just two walks to 16 strikeouts. In seven starts since June 1, Tillman is 4-0 with a 4.62 ERA.

In his last seven starts versus AL Central teams, Tillman is 5-0 with a 1.30 ERA since April 4, 2014. This year he is 2-0 with an ERA of 2.00 in three starts against teams from that division.

Price has been on a real roll lately, allowing two or fewer earned runs in nine of his past 10 starts, going 6-1 with an ERA of 1.63. Should he get the win tonight, Price will be a 10-game winner for the seventh straight year. The Tigers are 15-3 in his 18 starts this season.

In 18 career starts versus Baltimore, Price is 7-4 with an ERA of 2.79, but with just one win his last seven outings.

The Orioles have committed the fewest number of errors in the American League (39) and the second-fewest number of errors in the majors, behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers (36). The Orioles lead the AL and are tied for second in the majors with a .988 team fielding percentage.

In the AL East this afternoon, Seattle beat the first-place New York Yankees 4-3 as Robinson Cano hit a pair of two-run homers against his former team. He had hit just six homers all year before today.

Tampa Bay beat Toronto 3-2 as Brandon Guyer hit a tying home run in the seventh while Curt Casali hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth. The Rays snapped a five-game road losing streak and won for the eighth time in 12 meetings with Toronto this season.
