O's game blog: Looking for a series split with Red Sox

The Orioles came from behind twice last night to win and snap a six-game losing streak. Today they play the final game of a 10-game homestand and four-game series when they host the Boston Red Sox.

The O's trailed last night 3-1 before Anthony Santander's game-tying two-run homer in the eighth. He blasted No. 10 a distance of 426 feet down the left field line to tie it up at 3-3. It extended his hitting streak to 17 games. During this run, Santander is batting .338 (24-for-71) with seven doubles, a triple, eight homers and 20 RBIs. Last night, he produced his team-leading ninth multi-RBI game.

With those 10 homers, Santander is in a four-way tie for first in the American League with Chicago's Jose Abreu, New York's Luke Voit and Los Angeles' Mike Trout. Santander has 27 RBIs to tie Abreu for the AL lead.

The O's scored twice in the 10th to overcome a 4-3 deficit and win it 5-4. Pedro Severino's single to deep center ended the 3-hour, 36-minute game as the O's improved to 13-14. Over his past 13 games, Severino is batting .396 (19-for-48) with three doubles, three homers and 16 RBIs. He has four multi-RBI games in his past 10 contests.

The Orioles were 1-10 when trailing after seven innings before Saturday's win. They improved to 5-13 at home, 4-5 in one-run games and 3-3 versus Boston. They produced their second walk-off win and improved to 3-1 in extra innings.

Left-hander Wade LeBlanc (1-0, 7.89 ERA) could use a good outing today. He gave up five runs in four innings Tuesday against Toronto. After posting an ERA of 4.09 in his first two starts, that number is 11.81 over his past three. In that span, he has pitched just 10 2/3 innings, allowing 18 hits and 14 runs.

Lefties are hitting just .200 with an OPS of .658 against him, but right-handers are batting .311/.883. In three home starts, LeBlanc is 0-0 with an ERA of 8.53 with a WHIP of 1.579.

Boston acquired right-hander Zack Godley (0-2, 6.87 ERA) in late July and he makes his sixth appearance and fifth start today. For the year, he has thrown 18 1/3 innings, allowing 27 hits with a WHIP of 1.855 and 2.5 homers per nine innings. Boston is 0-4 when he starts. In three of his starts, he has gone exactly four innings, allowing just one run over 12 innings. But in the other two, he gave up 13 runs in 6 1/3 innings versus the Yankees and Rays.

The O's Pat Valaika has homered in three consecutive games for the first time in his career. The last O's hitter to homer in three straight was Jonathan Villar from Aug. 23-25, 2019 versus Tampa Bay. Valaika extended his current hitting streak to five games, matching the longest stretch of his career (also July 18-24, 2017).

Renato Nuñez hit a double to left field on the first pitch of his fourth-inning at-bat. For Nunez, 12 of his 29 hits have come on the first or second pitch of an at-bat. He has now hit safely in 21 of his 26 games and he has recorded an extra-base hit in 11 of the 26. As a team, the Orioles are batting .451 on the first pitch to lead the major leagues.
