O's game blog: Machado has eight multi-hit games his last 11 games

The Orioles will look for a sweep of a series shortened to two games by a rainout this afternoon in Minnesota. Last night Adam Jones drove in three runs to lead the Orioles to a 5-3 win. His two-run single in the ninth broke the 3-3 tie.

Jones now has 1,305 hits as an Oriole, passing Orioles Hall of Famer Mark Belanger (1,304) for sole possession of 12th on the club's all-time hits. list. Melvin Mora (1,323) ranks 11th. Jones three RBIs on Tuesday gives him 659 as an Oriole, moved him ahead of Nick Markakis (658) for sole possession of ninth place on the Orioles all-time RBI list. Mora (662) ranks eighth.

Manny Machado went 3-for-3 and is 5-for-7 with three homers and seven RBIs the last two games. Machado has eight multi-hit games his last 11 contests, batting .442 (19-for-43) with seven doubles, four homers and 12 RBIs.

Machado leads the American League in hits (46), doubles (15), OBP (.424), extra-base hits (25), total bases (91) and slugging (.722). He is second batting .365 and with 10 home runs.

On the mound this afternoon is a matchup of right-handers. Tyler Wilson (1-1, 3.04 ERA) starts for Baltimore and Phil Hughes (1-5, 5.85 ERA) for Minnesota.

The Orioles are 5-3 in Wilson's eight career starts, including a 2-1 mark this year. Wilson is 3-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 15 career appearances and, in the eight starts only, is 2-3 with a 4.20 ERA and four quality starts.

A 10th-round pick in 2011 out of the University of Virginia, Wilson gives up a .216 batting average to left-handed hitters, a .231 average against right-handed batters and an average of .278 when pitching with runners in scoring position.

Hughes recorded an ERA of 3.91 and four straight quality starts to begin this year. But he is 0-2 with an ERA of 12.86 his last two starts and gave up six runs in two innings versus Houston his last time out. In the first inning of his six outings, Hughes has allowed an ERA of 13.50 and average against of .429. In three home starts, he is 1-2 with a 5.19 ERA.

He took the loss against the Orioles on April 7 in Baltimore. Over six innings, he allowed six hits and three runs with no walks and four strikeouts, throwing 93 pitches.

In 24 career games (21 starts) versus the Orioles, Hughes is 8-6 with a 4.56 ERA and 1.375 WHIP. He has allowed 20 homers in 116 1/3 innings.

While Minnesota (8-24) has lost six in a row and 10 of 11 games, the Orioles (19-12) begin play this afternoon with the second-best record in the AL. They are tied for first in the AL East with Boston (20-13) in the games behind column but lead the division by winning percentage, .613 to .606.

The Orioles could move a season-high eight games over the .500 mark with a win today.

The 27 homers combined hit by Machado (10), Mark Trumbo (9) and Chris Davis (8) is equal to the entire total hit by two teams and more than the total hit by five other teams.
