Orioles homer happy again today (O's win 9-2)

MINNEAPOLIS - It's raining home runs at Target Field. No tarp needed.

The Orioles have hit three more today in four innings, including two by Mark Trumbo, and they lead 5-1 in the top of the fifth.

Trumbo has taken over the team lead with 11 home runs and he also ranks first in RBIs with 27. He hit a two-run shot in the second that traveled an estimated distance of 431 feet, the ball slamming off the facing of the second deck in left field, and his solo shot in the fourth landed in the Orioles bullpen and was measured at 406 feet.

He must be getting tired.

Chris Davis followed Adam Jones' leadoff single in the fourth with a 424-foot blast to right field, the ball disappearing over the tiny section of bleachers. Trumbo stepped to the plate and heaped more abuse on Twins starter Phil Hughes, who's getting an earful from fans already cranky over the weather.

The Orioles have gone back-to-back in three straight games and six this season.

Trumbo has three multi-homer games this year.

Davis singled to lead off the second before Trumbo's initial blast. Davis began the day batting .217 and his average has risen to .231.

The Orioles have hit 11 home runs in their last three games. Manny Machado and Jones went back-to-back last night.

Eighteen of the Orioles' last 21 runs over three games have come via the home run.

Tyler Wilson served up Miguel Sano's leadoff home run in the second to cut the Orioles' lead to 2-1. Sano's ball traveled an estimated 416 feet to left field.

Wilson has thrown 53 pitches in four innings and he's retired seven in a row. He's got the Twins hitting the ball in the air, with all three outs in the first and third innings and two more in the fourth coming on fly balls.

Left-hander Pat Dean will work the fifth for the Twins in his major league debut.

The rain has stopped and fans slowly are making their way back to their seats in the lower section. They were bolting for cover.

Update: Wilson gave up an RBI single to Danny Santana in the fifth to reduce the lead to 5-2. Eduardo Nunez grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and make the game official.

Update II: Jones singled to lead off the sixth and Davis followed with an RBI double off the left field fence, barely missing his second home run. The lead has grown to 6-2.

Davis' average has increased from .196 last night to .237. He's a triple short of the cycle today.

Update III: Davis drove in his fourth run with a fielder's choice grounder that scored Joey Rickard in the seventh inning and increased the lead to 7-2.

Update IV: The Orioles swept the abbreviated two-game series with a 9-2 win over the Twins and moved eight games above .500 for the first time since the end of the 2014 season.

Jones hit a two-run homer in the ninth to end the scoring. Jones and Davis each had four hits.

Jones, Davis and Trumbo were a combined 10-for-15 with nine RBIs and seven runs scored.

Wilson allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. Mychal Givens and Brian Matusz finished up.

The Orioles were 0-7 against the Twins last season, but are 5-0 this season with a makeup game remaining.
