O's game blog: Wei-Yin Chen looks for his 10th win against Tampa Bay

After coming from three runs behind late in the game Thursday night to win, the Orioles let an early three-run lead get away last night and lost. Tonight, they play the third game of their four-game series at Tampa Bay.

On the mound, it's left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (9-7, 3.44 ERA) making his 29th start of the season and facing right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (10-5, 3.75 ERA).

alcs-chen-pitching-gray-sidebar.jpgBoth have faced their opponent tonight several times in 2015. In five starts versus the Rays, Chen is 1-2 with a 4.94 ERA. In four games and three starts against Baltimore, Ramirez is 1-1 with a 4.12 ERA.

Chen pitched well on Sunday when he picked up the win against Kansas City. Over seven innings, he allowed just two runs. He had given up nine runs in 9 2/3 innings over his previous two starts. In 11 second-half starts, Chen is 5-2 with a 4.60 ERA.

Chen has held opponents to a .177 batting average with runners in scoring position this season, which leads all qualifying starting pitchers in the majors. Chen averages 15.6 pitches per inning, which ranks 17th among qualifying American League starters and is the the fewest among O's starting pitchers with at least 10 starts.

Ramirez is coming off a great outing. On Monday against the Yankees, he pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings and gave up just one hit. In 15 games at home this season, he is 5-4 with a 2.38 ERA.

O's starting pitchers continue to struggle and have allowed 19 runs in 18 innings over their past four games. O's starters have recorded only three quality starts the last 21 games and 30 in the past 70 games since June 26.

Jonathan Schoop extended his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games on Friday. Schoop is batting .333 (15-for-45) with three homers and five RBIs during this stretch.

Manny Machado currently has 29 home runs and 17 stolen bases and is three steals shy of the seventh 20/20 season (homers/steals) in Orioles history. He would join Paul Blair (1969, 26/20), Don Baylor (1975, 25/32), Reggie Jackson (1976, 27/28) and Brady Anderson, who did so three times for the Orioles. Anderson accomplished the feat in 1992 (21/53), 1996 (50/21) and 1999 (24/36).

The Orioles (72-75) have won seven of their last 10 games and are 9-8 versus the Rays. Tampa Bay (71-76) has lost five of seven and is 6-10 this month.
