O's game blog: Wojciechowski faces Boston at Fenway

When he faced the Boston Red Sox July 21 in Baltimore, O's right-hander Asher Wojciechowski (2-5, 4.84 ERA) threw a gem as the Orioles won 5-0. It was a combined one-hitter by Wojciechowski, Paul Fry and Michael Givens.

Wojciechowski had a no-hitter through six innings. Through four innings he fanned nine and got swings and misses on 18 of his 58 pitches. He finished having allowed one hit with two walks and 10 strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings.

He and his mound mates ended Boston's run of 81 games without being shut out, which was the second-longest streak in the majors this year.

So can Wojciechowski recapture that form tonight at Fenway Park? In his most recent start - Sunday against Houston - he gave up four hits and three runs in six innings on 103 pitches. He has three quality starts over his past five games, going 2-2 with a 4.34 ERA and .189 average against.

Former Oriole farmhand, left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (13-5, 4.31 ERA) gets the start for Boston. In 25 starts he has a WHIP of 1.374, allows 8.9 hits per nine innings, 1.4 homers, 3.4 walks and 8.9 strikeouts.

Over his past three starts, his ERA is 5.60 and he's allowed a .310 batting average and .860 OPS with 22 hits over 17 2/3 innings. In two 2019 starts against the O's, he is 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA. In 17 career games, he is 8-5 with a 3.46 ERA and 1.155 WHIP.

The Orioles (39-83) have lost five in a row and 10 of 11 games, allowing 33 homers and 107 runs. They've allowed eight runs or more in eight of the last 11 games, including last night in a series-opening 9-1 loss at Fenway.

Boston (65-59) is 9-5 this year against the Orioles and 3-2 at home. They are 28-8 in the last 36 games between these teams.

Trey Mancini has hit safely in 10 straight games at Fenway Park, hitting .325 (13-for-40). For his career, Mancini is a .365/.417/.624 (31-for-85) hitter with nine doubles, two triples, three home runs, 16 runs and 16 RBIs in 22 games at Fenway Park. His 1.040 career OPS at Fenway ranks third among active players (min. 75 at-bats). In 14 games in Boston this season, Mancini is batting .375/.453/.750 (21-for-56) with nine doubles, four home runs, 13 runs and eight RBIs.

Mancini collected an extra-base hit in his seventh straight game there last night. According to STATS, his seven straight games with an EBH at Fenway Park are the most by an Oriole in club history and tied for the fifth-longest streak by a visiting player in major league history. The Twins' Harmon Killebrew and the Yankees' Carlos Beltrán hold the record with nine straight games.
