O's late rally falls short in 4-3 loss to Seattle

The Orioles were able to beat Seattle when Hisashi Iwakuma and Felix Hernandez got the start but lost today when Chris Young took the mound, although they did rally late in the game. The 35-year-old right-hander held the Orioles to two hits - both by Delmon Young - over seven scoreless innings this afternoon as Seattle beat the Orioles 4-3 at Safeco Field. jones-leading-off-orange-sidebar.jpgDown 4-0, the O's scored three runs in the eighth. With two outs, Adam Jones was hit, Nelson Cruz walked and they both moved up on a wild pitch. Chris Davis then hit a sharp grounder to third that went for an error on Kyle Seager as two runs scored and Davis advanced to second on the throw home. He would score on J.J. Hardy's single but the O's could not get the tying run home. Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his 28th save, and the game ended with David Lough trying to steal second. He broke too soon, and Rodney stepped off the mound and threw to second for the final out. The Orioles have been held to seven hits or less in 12 of their last 14 games, and they have scored more than four runs just once in that stretch. They went 3-for-30 at bat today. With the loss, the Orioles fall to 57-46 and their American League East lead is three games over both New York and Toronto after the Blue Jays beat the Yankees this afternoon. Chris Young had been pitching well with an ERA of 2.45 over his last seven starts. Today, held the O's to those two hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Of the 21 outs he recorded, 16 were on strikeouts and pop-ups as he improved to 9-6 with an ERA of 3.04. Meanwhile, Bud Norris was not as sharp today as he was in recent starts. He allowed three runs in the third and one in the fifth after pitching to an ERA of 2.37 over his previous five starts. He went five innings, allowing six hits and the four runs with three walks and six strikeouts. He threw 97 pitches, and is now 8-7 with an ERA of 3.94. O's starters had pitched to an ERA of 1.29 in the last five games. The Mariners (54-50) won for just the third time in nine games since the All-Star break and for the fifth time in 15 games. The Orioles fall to 5-4 on this road trip, 14-21 in day games and 16-10 against the American League West. In the series finale on Sunday afternoon, the expected starters are Miguel Gonzalez (5-5, 3.91 ERA) for the Orioles and left-hander Roenis Elias (8-8, 4.41 ERA) for the Mariners.
