O's lose late lead and fall 7-5 in 10 to the Yankees (postgame quotes)

The Orioles bullpen has had some good moments in recent games. But tonight will not be added to the list. The New York Yankees scored two in the eighth to tie the game and three in the 10th to win 7-5 over the Orioles at Camden Yards.

The Orioles (37-91) have lost five in a row, seven of eight and 16 of the last 20 games. New York (80-47) has the second-best record in the majors, won for the 12th time in 17 games and is now 7-6 against the Orioles.

O's right-hander Cody Carroll, traded from New York in the Zach Britton deal, came on in the 10th off a 4-4 tie. With one out, Neil Walker homered to right-center on a 3-2 pitch for a 5-4 lead. After a walk, Gleyber Torres stole second and went on to third on an Austin Wynns throwing error. Moments later, he could trot home when Luke Voit hit a two-run homer for a 7-4 lead. Voit also hit a two-run shot in the fourth for his first career multi-homer game.

New York bullpen righty David Robertson replaced starter CC Sabathia in a 2-2 tie to begin the seventh and John Andreoli reached on an error by Torres at short. Two outs later, Jonathan Villar hit his 10th homer of the year and fourth as an Oriole in 20 games. He has homered three times the past eight games. The O's led 4-2.

But the O's bullpen could not hold the two-run lead in the top of the eighth. Three balls not hit very hard conspired to get New York even at 4-4. The last of the three was a two-run single by Torres off Michael Givens with the bases loaded. He flared one into short right and Adam Jones' throw home was ahead of the runner, but Wynns could not hang onto the short hop at the plate.

Sabathia had an ERA of 2.05 in the first inning this year but the Orioles took a 2-0 lead off him in the first on a Davis two-run single to right. Leadoff hitter Cedric Mullins singled to center and Villar pushed a bunt single toward first base. Both runners moved up into scoring position on Jones' flyout to center. Davis drove in his 42nd and 43rd runs.

Villar had three hits and combined with Mullins to go 4-for-9 with a walk, a homer and three runs scored.

O's right-hander Alex Cobb stranded two runners in scoring position in the last of the first and fanned four over the first three innings. But New York tied it on one swing in the top of the fourth. Voit's two-run homer to left-center was his first with New York and made it a 2-2 game. He hit a Cobb curveball 107.4 mph off the bat and it went 403 feet to knot the score.

But Cobb would throw yet another strong game for the Orioles, recording his sixth straight quality start seventh in the last eight games. He's allowed two earned runs or less in seven of those games. His ERA is 2.20 over his past six games and 2.24 in the last eight. He got a no-decision, but lowered his season ERA to 5.00 in throwing 100 pitches.

Sabathia had another strong game as well allowing five hits and two runs over six innings with two walks and eight strikeouts. He threw 80 pitches in his first start since Aug. 12. He had been on the DL with right knee inflammation.

These teams will play two games on Saturday with a separate admission day-night doubleheader. Games begin at 1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m.

Postgame quotes:

Cobb on his outing: "Today I actually felt a little bit off, but I think being off now compared to where I was earlier are two different kind of descriptions. Just the ability to still go out and compete when you don't have your best stuff just kind of shows that I'm getting closer to where I want to be. Even when you have days that you don't feel like your stuff is as sharp as you'd like it, you still find ways to get outs."

Cobb when asked if he had more innings in him: "No, I mean it was kind of a mutual decision on that. We had some other issues we were dealing with, nothing big or cause for concern or anything. It was something we decided together."

Manager Buck Showalter said Cobb had a blister issue tonight.

Cobb on the biggest difference for him the last few weeks: "Just having an opportunity to be out there every fifth day and working through some really poor mechanics that I had early on. You know you can't ever replicate the time out there, the time spent competing. Facing hitters, you can throw as many bullpens and flat grounds that you want, but until a hitter tells you what your stuff is doing, you don't really know. Feel like it is just starting to come around where I feel more comfortable out there."
