O's rally late, but fall in 10 innings at Toronto (postgame quotes)

TORONTO - On a night where Dylan Bundy struggled, the Orioles offense finally didn't. But it still did not lead to a win. After the Orioles scored five late runs to tie this game, Toronto won 8-7 via a walk-off single in the last of the 10th.

Facing lefty Paul Fry, who got the last out of the ninth and with two outs and no one on, Russell Martin got an infield hit when shortstop Tim Beckham could not make an accurate off-balance throw on a grounder on the left side. A walk followed and then Aledmys Díaz hit a grounder on the left side. It went off the glove of third baseman Renato Núñez and under Beckham's glove. On that base hit, Toronto won the game.

The Orioles needed to keep that ball in the infield but failed to do so as Toronto registered its seventh walk-off win. Three of those have come in their last five games versus the Orioles.

And then Tyler Clippard was bashed for three runs in the ninth and could not get the game's final out to win in regulation. Down 7-4, Trey Mancini led off with a double and advanced to third on an error. Clippard airmailed a pitch and Mancini scored on the wild pitch. It was 7-5.

Then Caleb Joseph hit his second homer and suddenly the Orioles were within a run. It was only fitting that Jonathan Schoop, playing without best friend Manny Machado, who is now in Los Angeles, came up big in the ninth. With two outs, Schoop's homer to left tied it at 7-7. It was his 100th career homer.

The Orioles ended the pre All-Star break portion of their schedule with just one quality start in their last 11 games. And they didn't get one tonight at Rogers Centre. Bundy went five innings and yielded five hits and five runs on three homers.

In the second game of this series on Saturday afternoon at 1:07 p.m., right-hander Alex Cobb (2-12, 6.41 ERA) faces right-hander Marcus Stroman (2-7, 5.86 ERA.)

Manager Buck Showalter felt Beckham had time to plant and make stronger throw with two outs in the 10th: "Probably. It's a lot of hindsight. You've got a guy running not particularly well down there. If it's an accurate throw, he's out. He just got in a little bit of a hurry there. You've got to keep that last one in the infield, obviously. Fry was good again. He was impressive.

"(Beckham) had a big two-run homer to get us ahead, but we went back out there and gave it up. A lot of solo home runs don't usually beat you, but when you give up that many. We clawed our way back into it. We just couldn't get over the hump there. Defense was a challenge, kind of caught up to us."

Showalter on Beckham's first game at short after the Machado trade: "Tim and ... they'll get settled in. They'll get comfortable. First game together. I'll give them that. It will get better."

Showalter on Bundy's struggles giving up the longballs: "Just bad location. He hung a breaking ball, the first one. He just had some fastballs where he wasn't trying to go if you look back at where he was trying to throw it, and where he threw it. Dylan'll be fine. I bet he makes a good start next time out."

Bundy on struggling for three straight starts: "Command overall (has been a problem). Today was moreso the fastball command. I didn't really have much command of the heater today. Thought the off-speed was pretty sharp. Just left a few pitches up there a lot more in the fifth than the rest of the game."

Bundy on whether he is still feeling the effect of the recent ankle injury: "No, not at all. Ankle has been 100 percent now for quite some time. I just have to get the ball down like I said. Command the fastball a little better and the off-speed pitches will play a little bit better after that."

Beckham on the Martin single with two outs in the 10th and the one that ended the game: "I had a lot more time than I thought, a lot more time. The play has to be made every time. We played a good game as a team. It sucks it came down like that, but we'll get them tomorrow. It's a tough pill to swallow. It's a tough one. It's a tough blow right there, but we'll some back tomorrow and play some winning baseball.

"Just take the positive. The positive outweighs the negative. It was definitely a good team game and like I said, the plays tonight, I need to make those plays every time and I definitely will make those plays."
