What seemed headed for a game ending with another blowout win for the New York Yankees over the Orioles, the game took another turn at the end of the top of the fifth inning tonight.
The MASN cameras caught Chris Davis directing some heated words in what appeared to be the direction of Orioles manager Brandon Hyde. As to why this occurred, we don't have that answer yet. But Davis was being restrained by hitting coach Don Long and injured Oriole Mark Trumbo for several seconds before he went back and sat on the dugout bench.
When his spot in the order came up in the last of the fifth, Jace Peterson pinch-hit for Davis, who had struck out in the third inning leaving his average at .182.
Several times this year both Davis and Hyde have remarked about the great relationship they've had this season. That took a different turn mid-game tonight.
As for the game, Yankees batters again poured it on O's pitchers with some help from the Baltimore defense. New York won 14-2 to complete a three-game sweep.
New York scored four in the fourth to lead 4-0 on lefty John Means. With runners on first and third and no outs in the inning, Cameron Maybin's bloop to right-center fell in. Center fielder Stevie Wilkerson seemed poise to charge in for the catch but right fielder Trey Mancini made a sliding try for the ball and didn't get it. After the inning extended by an out they didn't get, catcher Kyle Higashioka batted and hit a three-run homer on an 0-2 curveball. Two runs in the fifth added on to the lead and five in the sixth made this a blowout.
New York swept its fourth straight series in 2019 against the Orioles. Baltimore is 2-13 with 12 straight losses this year and has now lost 15 straight at home against New York.
The Yankees wrap up the season series at Oriole Park going 10-0 and they hit 43 homers scoring 95 runs .
The Yankees have hit a major league record 52 homers versus the Orioles this year. That breaks the MLB mark they set in 1956 in hitting 48 against the Kansas City A's.
Means took the loss to fall to 8-7 with an ERA of 3.36. He was limited by a pitch count in coming of the injured list tonight. He went 3 2/3 and allowed five hits and four runs on 80 pitches. His ERA is 7.11 in four second-half starts. Reliever Tayler Scott allowed three hits and four runs in 1/3 of an inning.
The Yankees scored 32 runs and hit 16 homers in this series. Their 15-game win streak over the Orioles in Baltimore is tied for the second longest in American League history. Toronto won 15 straight at Boston from 1987-89. The record is 18 straight by Boston at the New York Yankees from 1911-13.
Mancini hit a solo homer (No. 27) for the first Baltimore run and Wilkerson had an RBI double in the ninth. After this series and what happend mid-game tonight the Orioles have some regrouping to do before the Houston Astros, who are first place in the AL West, arrive Friday night.
