O's tie it in ninth, get walk-off win in 12th against Blue Jays

Three outs from a damaging loss, the Orioles instead pulled out an important win. They got a game-tying homer in the last of the ninth and Mark Trumbo's walk-off single in the last of the 12th to beat Toronto 5-4.

They trailed Toronto 4-3 heading to the last of the ninth and Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna, who has 35 saves, came on. But catcher Welington Castillo greeted him with his second solo homer of the day and the Orioles had life.

With two outs, Osuna walked Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop reached on an infield single up the middle. That brought up Adam Jones. But Jones popped up and the game moved to extra innings.

It was the Orioles' 11th walk-off win of the year, and for Trumbo, his fourth walk-off hit of the year and the ninth of his career.

The Orioles, who began the day 2 1/2 games out for the second American League wild card, improved to 70-67 as they split the four-game series.

Tied 3-3 in the seventh, the Blue Jays pushed across a run against the Orioles bullpen for a 4-3 lead. With one out, Ryan Goins grounder toward third off Richard Bleier caromed off Manny Machado's glove and into short left for a double. Goins moved to third on a groundout and scored when pinch-hitter Michael Saunders hit a hot smash toward first off Davis' glove for a go-ahead single off Darren O'Day. Two balls that hit off gloves combined to put the Blue Jays ahead.

O's starter Chris Tillman has had outings before marred by one bad inning and it happened again today. He got the first six outs on just 19 pitches, but allowed a three-run homer during a 30-pitch top of the third to fall behind 3-0.

Tillman walked No. 9 hitter Richard Urena with one out and leadoff batter Teoscar Hernández singled. Then Josh Donaldson homered to right on an 0-1 fastball as Toronto grabbed a 3-0 lead. Donaldson hit No. 25 a distance of 398 feet for his second three-run homer in two games.

The Orioles used two homers of their own to pull within one. Castillo's solo shot to left in the third plated their first run. It was No. 17 for Castillo and his fifth in the last 11 games. He has seven homers in 67 at-bats since Aug. 1. An inning later, Trumbo's 433 foot-blast to center cut Toronto's lead to 3-2. It was No. 21 for Trumbo, who had hit just one homer his past 14 games.

In the sixth, the Orioles got even against lefty Brett Anderson. Schoop led off with a double, advanced to third on a grounder and scored on Trey Mancini's sac fly for a 3-3 tie.

Anderson allowed three runs over six innings on just 59 pitches. Tillman went four innings plus two batters and gave up three hits and three runs on 72 pitches. Tillman has allowed 13 runs in 14 2/3 innings over his past three starts.

The Orioles will host the second-place New York Yankees Monday at 2:05 p.m. to start a three-game series. Right-hander Dylan Bundy (13-8, 3.94 ERA) faces lefty Jordan Montgomery (7-7, 4.15 ERA).
