NEW YORK - The Orioles made another trade today, acquiring infielder Alex Liddi and International Signing Bonus Slot No. 3 from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for the Orioles' International Signing Bonus Slot No. 2.
Liddi has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.
Liddi, 24, has appeared in 61 major league games for the Mariners since 2011, batting .208/.266/.370 with six home runs and 16 RBIs. This year, he's hitting .263/.322/.454 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs in 59 games with Triple-A Tacoma.
In 2011, Liddi hit 33 home runs between Seattle (three) and Tacoma (30).
Liddi was signed by the Mariners in 2005 as an amateur free agent out of Instituto Aicardi Agragia in Albenga, Italy. He played for Team Italy in the 2013 World Baseball Classic and batted .375 (3-for-8) with a double and two RBIs in two games. The Orioles played Team Italy in spring training at Ed Smith Stadium.
Liddi is a three-time participant in Major League Baseball's Futures Game (2009-11) and was the 2009 California League Most Valuable Player.
To make room for Liddi on the 40-man roster, infielder Russ Canzler has been designated for assignment.
Canzler was batting .276/.369/.430 with 15 doubles, 11 homers and 49 RBIs in 86 games. He was considered a below-average fielder at various positions, which worked against him.
Meanwhile, the Orioles lost again today 5-4, with Yankees future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera pitching a scoreless ninth.
Pinch-hitter Ryan Flaherty singled with two outs in the ninth, but Chris Dickerson struck out.
Kevin Gausman tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, with one walk and one strikeout. Brian Matusz walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning.
No issues with the bullpen today.
The Orioles outhit the Yankees 11-10 but dropped their second game of the series.
