The Orioles announced tonight that they have acquired right-hander Jeremy Hellickson and cash considerations from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for outfielder Hyun Soo Kim, minor league left-hander Garrett Cleavinger, and International Signing Bonus Slots.
Hellickson, 30, has gone 6-5 with a 4.73 ERA (59 ER/112.1 IP) over 20 starts with the Phillies this season. Over 194 career Major League games (187 starts), he has posted a 67-63 record with a 3.98 ERA (481 ER/1087.1 IP) and 803 strikeouts. The right-hander led the Phillies in wins (12), and finished second in starts (32), innings pitched (189.0 IP), and Quality Starts (17) last season. Originally selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the fourth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Hellickson won the 2011 American League Rookie of the Year Award after leading all Major League rookies in ERA (2.95), starts (29), Quality Starts (20), innings pitched (189.0), complete games (two), and opponents' batting average (.210). He was named co-winner of the AL Gold Glove Award in 2012 and went 40-36 with a 3.78 ERA (269 ER/640.0 IP) over 115 games (108 starts) in five seasons with Tampa Bay from 2010-14.
Kim, 29, batted .232/.305/.288 (29-for-125) with four doubles, one home run, 11 runs, and 10 RBI over 56 games with the Orioles this season. Over 151 career games with the Orioles, Kim hit .281/.359/.381 with 20 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 47 runs, and 32 RBI. Kim was originally signed by the Orioles on December 23, 2015.
Cleavinger, 23, went 2-4 with a 6.28 ERA (27 ER/38.2 IP) and 42 strikeouts in 27 games with Double-A Bowie this season. He went 15-8 with a 3.79 ERA (59 ER/140.0 IP) and 176 strikeouts over 83 career minor league appearances. Cleavinger was selected by the Orioles in the third round (No. 102 overall) of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft.
