The Orioles aren't done handing out minor league deals. And they're certainly not done addressing the pitching depth in their system.
Another wave of signings were announced today with right-handers Christian Binford, Perci Garner and Asher Wojciechowski, and left-handers Jason Gurka and Luis Lugo. The Garner news broke late last night, with confirmation coming via the pitcher and his agency.
Gurka, 29, is back with the organization that drafted him in the 15th round in 2008 from Angelina (Texas) College. He signed with the Rockies as a free agent in December 2014 and 2015 and with the Yankees in 2016. He signed with the Angels on June 5, 2017.
Unable to get past Triple-A Norfolk while in the Orioles system, making two starts in 2014, Gurka notched 18 relief appearances over the past three seasons with the Rockies and Angels. He's registered a 9.00 ERA with 18 runs and 34 hits allowed in 18 innings.
Three appearances came this summer with the Angels. Gurka worked two-thirds of an inning and allowed two hits with one walk.
Wojciechowski, who turns 29 this month, was the 41st overall pick by the Blue Jays in 2010 from The Citadel. He registered a 7.16 ERA in five games (three starts) with the Astros in 2015 and a 6.50 ERA in 25 games (eight starts) with the Reds this summer. He had a 4.00 ERA and 1.185 WHIP this summer in 17 relief appearances.
Wojciechowski was part of a 10-player trade between the Blue Jays and Astros on July 20, 2012 that also included Joe Musgrove, J.A. Happ, Francisco Cordero and Brandon Lyon.
Binford, who turns 25 later this month, was chosen by the Royals in the 30th round of the 2011 draft out of Mercersburg (Pa.) Academy. He's 37-52 with a 4.28 ERA in 131 minor league games, including 123 starts, and went 7-10 with a 7.24 ERA this summer in 22 games (19 starts) with Triple-A Omaha.
Binford threw a scoreless inning in the 2014 All-Star Futures Game.
Lugo, 23, was 8-7 with a 4.35 ERA in 26 games (25 starts) at Double-A Akron, the highest he's climbed in the minors. He's 37-45 with a 4.15 ERA in 141 games (131) starts in the Indians' system.
Garner, who turns 29 later this month, was a second-round pick of the Phillies in 2010 out of Ball State University. He appeared in eight games with the Indians in 2016 and allowed five earned runs (six total) and 12 hits in 9 1/3 innings with five walks, 12 strikeouts and two hit batters. He was 7-1 with a 1.83 ERA in 41 games last year with Akron and Triple-A Columbus.
Injuries ruined Garner's 2017 season, limiting him to only 13 games at Akron and Columbus. He gave up seven runs with one hit and eight walks in 1 1/3 innings in Triple-A.
The Orioles will confirm spring training invitations at a later date.
