The Baltimore Orioles announced the "home team" lineup for a celebrity softball game versus a "visitors" team of military veterans scheduled for Sunday, April 6 at Ed Smith Stadium. The game will be part of a full day of free activities at the All-American Family Day & Concert, featuring a performance by Grammy Award-winning band America. The event is part of the Orioles' "Arts in the Ballpark" series and the Legacy of Valor campaign.
"The Orioles are proud to field an enthusiastic team of media personalities, elected officials and other community leaders in this game to honor America's military heroes," said DAVID ROVINE, Vice President of Orioles-Sarasota. "We encourage the public to come out and enjoy a day of free, family-oriented activities including a ceremony to honor veterans, the celebrity softball game, and hands-on activities, capped off with a special performance by 'America.'"
Scheduled to take the field in Orioles' colors are ABC-7's Scott Dennis and Matt Winitz; ClearChannel radio personalities Maverick and Lulu from CTQ and David Jones and Billy Jack from WSRZ; SNN's Grant Boxleitner, Cassie Nall and Amber Stidham; Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce representative Bob Messick; Herald Tribune Media Group publisher Pat Doersey; North Port Mayor Jim Blucher; Saks Fifth Avenue's Sally Schule; Sarasota City Commissioner Suzanne Atwell; Sarasota County Commissioner Joe Barbetta; Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight; Sarasota County Tourist Development Council Member Norm Schimmel; Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino; Sarasota Deputy Police Chief Col. Stephen Moyer; Venice City Council Member Jeanette Gates; Venice Mayor John Holic; and Venice Vice Mayor Emilio Carlesimo.
"So that none of our players gets too serious, comedian Tim Wilkins will be master of ceremonies for the game," Rovine said. "We're looking forward to good-spirited, entertaining competition, punctuated with humor from Tim."
The gates open at 12:00 p.m. when families will enjoy kid-friendly, hands-on activities including baseball trivia hosted by the South Florida Museum, an exhibit from Mote Marine Laboratory, and much more. Following a special "Salute to Returning Veterans" ceremony, the softball game will take place on the ballpark's main field. After the game, New York-based singer/songwriter Margaret Valentine will perform. The All-American Family Day concludes with a free concert by Grammy Award-winning artists America at 4 p.m.
All events and activities are free and concessions will be available for purchase. Parking is available in the East Lot at a cost of $5 per vehicle. For the concert, attendees may sit on the outfield grass or in the stands; however, no lawn chairs or high-heeled shoes will be permitted on the field.
The "Arts in the Ballpark" series continues on May 10, when the Sarasota Orchestra performs "Spirit of America," an outdoor Pops concert featuring guest artist Moly Cherryholmes, a five-time Grammy-nominated violinist, vocalist and songwriter.
