Orioles announce moves with Davis and Pearce (updated)

The Orioles officially placed first baseman Chris Davis on the 15-day disabled list today with a strained left oblique. The assignment is retroactive to Saturday. Davis is eligible to return on May 11, but manager Buck Showalter told reporters earlier today that he's not expecting it. Davis batted .250 (19-for-76) with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 22 games before sustaining the injury Friday night. Davis came to the plate twice, striking out and grounding out, before Ryan Flaherty replaced him at first base. Also, the Orioles have placed outfielder Steve Pearce on unconditional release waivers, which expire on Tuesday. Teams will now have 48 hours to claim Pearce and take on his remaining salary for 2014. He avoided arbitration with the Orioles by agreeing to an $850,000 contract. Pearce can sign with any team if he clears waivers. The Orioles designated Pearce on Tuesday to make room for left-hander T.J. McFarland, who was optioned after Friday night's game. McFarland could return on Tuesday as a temporary roster replacement for Davis. As for today's game, Adam Jones dropped Nori Aoki's fly ball for a three-base error leading off the game, and Omar Infante's ground ball gave Kansas City a 1-0 lead. Jones ran down the deep drive, but the ball bounced out of his glove. The Orioles are 5-0 when scoring first at home this season, and 0-5 when the opponent scores first. Nick Markakis, starting again at first base, grounded out to end the bottom of the first. He's hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, batting .375/.479/.450 with three doubles and five RBIs. He has six multi-hit games in that span. Also, the Orioles announced that the May 24 game against the Indians will start at 12:35 p.m. Plan accordingly. Update: Infante has driven in both runs today, his sacrifice fly in the third giving Kansas City a 2-0 lead. The Royals manufactured that run. Jarrod Dyson reached on an infield hit, stole second, took third on a bouncer to Gonzalez and scored on the fly ball. Gonzalez has allowed two runs (one earned) and three hits in four innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. He's thrown 64 pitches, 41 for strikes. The Orioles have one hit in three innings, David Lough's infield single in the third. Manny Machado collected his fifth hit today in three games at Single-A Frederick.
